#ipas toolkit
24 messages in this thread
I received the 3D Studio IPAS Toolkit from Addison-Wesley and I was wondering
if someone could tell me the bare minimum to use the IPAS. Thanks
Andrew
Andrew,
did you just receive ipas2? the software requirements are listed on pg 2 and 3
of the 3d studio ipas toolkit reference manual.
what specific questions do you have?
jonas[adesk]
Jonas,
I have 3ds r3 but I think I received ipas2. I just want to use the ipas for
now and I have no need to write my own routines. Do I need to get metaware
high c and pharlap or can I get ready made ipas that I can just put into my
process dir and use?
Andrew,
you can order IPAS routines from:
The Yost Group – 1-800-368-4727
Pyros Partnership – 714-833-0334
Schreiber Instruments – 303-759-1024
Download IPAS.txt from the what's new section of the library for descriptions
of available ipas routines.

You can also order IPAS routines from:

Thanks!

These and others are available from Digimation, (504)785-2940.

IPAS.txt is posted. Let's add to that list for other available
routines. I'd like to refer future questions like these to a
living document in the libs.

Hi Mike White here. We will be releasing our routines through Schreiber. Mike
White SunDog Pro.
Jonas:
As the author of IPAS.TXT, I just put in all the IPAS routines that I knew that
were shipping as of the end of last year.
I will be upgrading the file and re-posting regularly.
Any other IPAS writers, please send me e-mail in the format of IPAS.TXT to make
sure you get included as you would like!

PMJI, Greg,
I just thought I'd take the time the thank you for voluntering to keep track of
the IPAS.TXT File. This Benifits Dealers and EndUsers alike and just adds to
the overall benifits of belonging to this Forum.
It's this kind of selfless devotion to the forum that makes me proud to belong
to such fine group of people such as we have here.
It also motivates one to try harder to add to the Q&A that takes place and
share the benifits & Knowledge we've all accumulated over the years here.
Thank you Greg!

You're welcome! And knowing that it is appreciated makes it all the more

As far as I know, but it may take a while to all shake out! <g>
What do you mean when you say you got the kit from Addison-Wesley?
Addison-Wesley is the Autodesk distributer for the University of Florida and
the toolkit came bundled with 3ds, but I can't do anything with it unless I
have the PharLap and Metaware ( I think ).
I read the reference guide that accompanied the toolkit and it said to write
my own ipas I need the PharLap and Metaware, but it said nothing about running
them.
Andrew,
For making IPAS, you need either Metaware or Watcom compilers. You don't need
Pharlap. You run IPAS routines from within 3D Studio. If you want to write
standalone 32bit programs with the compiler you will need Pharlap if you get
Metaware. You don't need Pharlap if you get Watcom.
Basically, for 32bit dos programs, you need a compiler and a dos extender. IPAS
modules use the DOS extender that's used with 3D Studio (Pharlap). Metaware
does not come with a DOS extender and the one it will work with is Pharlap.
Watcom comes with its own dos extender.
Bailey
Bailey: What Watcom compiler do you need? I got one of their "big"
compilers a while ago at work, but I see that they are selling a "C32
for DOS" for about $200. Is this compiler OK?
I've been told the cheap one is ok.
OK, that certainly sounds good. I've done a little C programming and a
lot of Modula-2 so I would rather not invest a lot in a C compiler if
I didn't have to – I'm not planning on it being my main development
language, just a way to write IPAS stuff.
Ok, ok. This entire line of questioning (and answering) is somewhat
weird. If you don't even know how to run an IPAS, just forget the kit
all together for now and concentrate in the 3D Studio Tutorials for
the next couple of weeks. After you get acquainted with 3D Studio,
you will know what IPAS'es are, why you would want them and how to
use them. Only then I will attempt to walk you through the process of
"writing" them (if that's something you want to do).
Included with 3D Studio you will find several IPAS'es of all kinds.
You can also download some samples from right here (just browse the
libraries using IPAS as the keyword).

I understand how to run them and use them ( the ipas that came with 3ds). I
don't know what to do with the toolkit. Is it only for writing ipas because I
don't wish to do that, just yet. What I want to know is if there are ipas that
are ready to use as is, and I just have to put them in.
Nop. You don't want the kit. There aren't any new IPAS in there. That's just a
"kit" to develop IPAS. In the Tool kit disk you will find tools and sample
files to build new IPAS'es. The sample code is not compiled and in order to run
them you would need the appropriate compilers and linkers. As I said, there are
no new IPAS'es in the kit so you don't have to worry about it.
Andrew,
download IPAS.txt for a current list of IPAS routines that you can
buy-plug-and play with.
