#Toaster Genlock ?

Have my Toaster 4000 board installed in my Amiga 4000/040. After a horrendous
struggle got the software on to the hard disk (Ver: 3.1).
At this moment of bliss…. disaster struck once again !
On trying to start Toaster…. I get a dismaying message… "TOASTER UNABLE TO
GENLOCK". Needless to say, have a good Black Burst on input 1, and a NTSC
monitor on Program out.
I think there is a simple fix for this…. but have forgotten just what it
is…
CAN ANYONE.. HELP ?

Hilary, What do you have connected to the Amiga RGB video out? The Toaster can

Have a SONY RGB monitor connected, it works fine.
Think I have found the problem… thanks to CIS input.
I had the Toaster board set up for my old Amiga 2000. To make the present
change to the Amiga 4000… one has to move some jumpers on the board upon
installing. Clumsy fool… I forgot to do this. When you get ancient… one
forgets!
This PM will try and correct my grevious error. Hopefully the darn thing will
then lock up to the external sync' on input 1.

It's nice to have so many good and Amiga educated friends around. Hope that

You may not be done yet. The SONY monitor has a traditional 75 ohm termination
on the composite sync line, just as it has on R, G, & B. The Amiga won't drive
this well enough for the Toaster to gen-lock properly. (With such a low line
level, the Toaster doesn't always detect composite sync; it needs to look at
composite sync in order to close the gen-lock loop.)
Since the 1084 presents an impedance of around 225 ohms on the composite sync
line, I've been recommending a series resistance of 150 ohms. This series
resistance can be put into the cable to save you from hacking on your Amiga or
monitor. (Composite sync is pin 10 on the 23-pin video port.)

The SONY has been in use as the computer RGB monitor for around 4 to 5 years so
far…. just as an RGB taking the computer screen.
All the NTSC output – from the Toaster REVIEW and PROGRAM – goes to D/A's which
distribute the picture(s). These have compensation for cable length etc. We
get a flawless picture on the Master monitor and the other 12 monitors in the
studio.
Master sync' and other test signals come from a big Leader signal generator
with an oven controlled crystal, so we are nearly spot on as far as quality of
signal is concerned.

My point is that the 75 ohm termination loads the CSYNC line down to about 1
Vp-p. At this low level, the monitor will still work but not the Toaster.

Bruce…. I am rather lost….
Our system runs perfectly – with the SONY as the RGB computer monitor. You
should note that the SONY in question is not the usual consumer type monitor,
but a special pro' unit which I adapted to run with my previous SONY video
computer (The SMG series).
