#gpfax printing?

Does anyone here know how to print a fax with gpfax? I have a Laserjet
IIP with a Pac Page cartridge, so I can print with PCL or PS. GPfax
doesn't seem to have any control of its printing, and I don't know if it
supports either method. HELP!

GPFax uses your Prefernces printer driver. Prints fine to my 4MP using
either the LaserJet or PS drivers.

Saw your message about GPFax. My question doesn't have to do with GPFax, but
with the PS printer driver. Do you know of any PS printer drivers that work
with a 1.3 operating system? I also have the HP 4mp (which I bought after
being exhorted on by folks on this sig–perhaps including you). I do love the
printer, but have not succeeded in finding a PS printer driver. Fortunately
both my dtp and wordprocessing software have PS printer drivers. Don't suggest
purchasing an upgrade to my OS. I tried doing that in April– stocks were
depleted. Given the current CBM situation, who knows what will happen.

Baring that, there are a couple of ways you could produce post script
output without a Preferences printer driver. First, most word processors
provide direct support for PS. If you need to print a picture, import it
and print it. Same for ASCII. There are also a few programs (check the
libraries here) that put a postscript wrapper around an ASCII file and
send them off to the printer. Finally, and perhaps best of all, your 4MP
has the best of both worlds. You can use the LaserJet Preferences driver
for WorkBench and apps that don't support PostScript, but can still use
the PostScript direct from those apps that support it.

What's the phone number for Expert Systems?
Vis a vis the printer drivers, I have been printing in non-PS mode, but I just
like the way it looks from PS. I've ended up having to use a deskjet printer
driver (which is probably slower) because all of the laserjet printer drivers
that I could find wouldn't work with my operating system.

What? I could swear 1.3 came with a laserjet driver. I'm sure it did.
You don't need a laserjet 4 driver, just any old HP laserjet driver.
I don't know ES's number, but I bet you could find it in the back of a
recent AmigaWorld should you have one of those handy.

To add a little detail to Dale's message:
Keep your IIP selected in prefs/printer as your default printer; run
GP Fax; go to "Display/print fax and select which fax you want printed.
DO NOT ever select the GPFax print driver in your prefs/printer section –
whether sending a fax from a wordprocessor, or printing one out. It does
its thing without human intervention.

Can you load one of your fax files into something like Final Copy or
Deluxe Paint (the fax files are IFF); will it print from there?

I didn't know they were IFF, but I finally got it to print. I'm not sure
what I did!

Fax files are not IFF..but GPFax will convert them to iff..

There should be no problems. I can print happily with my LaserJet 4LM. I
generally use the standard hplaserjet driver since postscript is so much
slower. (CBM had several problems with postscript drivers. Until 3.1 (DQM)
the postscript driver did not support 'strip printing' of large images)

I tried it again just now and it worked. The print resolution seems
somewhat less then on screen, but it is quite readable and took less then
5 minutes for my 2000 and IIP to print it. Why it wouldn't go earlier I
don't know.
At least now I know not to use the ps driver (no, I don't have 3.1).

BTW, I received gpfax from Supra. In the long run, who should I turn to
for support, upgrades, etc.?

Tell it to print!
You have to make sure your prefs/printergfx and Prefs/Printer are set up
correctly. These settings determine your results of printing from GPFax.
But be sure to set these parameters when GPFax is NOT running if you
normally have GPFax set to use it's printer driver.
HAve had very nice results printing from GPFax to my LJ4 using PCL and my
LJ4 driver.
