#IVS Trump/A4000/040

Hi,
I just bought an A4000/040 and am absolutely frustrated. After several
years of having a 100% stable A2000/68030 system, this thing is like a
nightmare. I cannot keep it running for 10 minutes without a crash of some
kind. Even deleting files with DirOpus crashed on me.
I have not followed any A4000 threads, so if this is atypical, please let
me know. Perhaps I have other hardware incompatibilities, I just don't
know. If anyone has a clue, I'd really appreciate it.
Here is what I have:
A4000/040 25MHz
2 megs chip ram
12 megs 80ns fast ram
Seagate 120meg IDE hard drive
Maxtor 7213S SCSI hard drive
IVS Trumpcard Pro SCSI controller
AmigaDOS 3.0
That's it. Software that crashes includes DLG Pro 1.0 (I have the latest
update which patches the copyback problems), DLGMail, DirOpus v4.11.
I haven't even gotten to try my other software yet. I spent all day
tracking these down. Generally, it seems like my problem is with the SCSI
controller. It only seems to crash when accessing a file off the SCSI and
not the IDE. This is a pretty old board, perhaps the driver software/rom
needs updating?
Does anyone know the current status of IVS and what the latest version
numbers are for the software? Also, does IVS have a bulletin board? I
could use the number. I called the fax line and a woman answered (this was
late at night, too).

I have read over the last year or so that most SCSI controllers don't work on
the A4000.. 🙁
You might want to check out the DKB's 4091 card or the one by Expanson Systems
for the A4000.. and of those 2 I would spend the extra on the 4091 from DKB.
On a personal note, I love your Bullitin Manager for DLG… one of the best
regiestered pieces of DLG shareware I own….
Are you using FisherRexx on your BBS, Keith wrote that for me and it is being
used all over the world….
Wait till you see the new version of it Keith is writing now… it is very
nice..

Ok, I just looked it up in AW and that card is $300 from Creative. Yikes!
I guess I could sell the old card for $50 or so, but that isn't much
consolation.
Isn't that the deal where you could get a free motherboard upgrade or
something if you have an old Buster chip? Is that deal still ongoing?

God bless you! That is the nicest thing I've heard all weekend long. This
computer has really got me down in the dumps.

I have a copy, but I have not yet set it up. I will as soon as I get over
this current fiasco. I promise!!

Wait'll you see what I'm writing now for DLG! If you liked my last
program, you'll LOVE this one! 🙂 If I ever get this darned software
running right. Geez, does it take 8 months to convert DLG from Aztec to
SAS? Somehow I doubt it… feel like you are on a ride?

I can't offer an answer to your problems, but I might be able to offer
some hardware help. I just upgraded my 4000 w/ one of the WarpEngines from
MacroSystems – this means I've got a spare A2091 controller lying around.
I've used it in the 4000 for over a year, and (except for being dog slow)
it's worked just fine. If you use the util called MapBoard, you can get
speeds of up to 300KB/s.
I'd be willing to let the 2091 go for $60 + s/h…

Thanks, but no. I don't think I could exist with a hard drive that slow.
I'll probably end up selling the A4000 and going back to my trusty ol'
A2000/GVP 030/40 system. That computer never knew the meaning of the word
"guru".

I don't blame you for not wanting the A2091…it _was_ painfully slow
compared to the SCSI-II on the WarpEngine.
As for your Guru problem on the 4000, I had a problem with LightWave
Modeler and a few other programs oddly crashing, but it was fixed when I
got the latest version of the 68040.library file (in your LIBS:
directory.) I haven't had any problems with either 37.10 or 37.30.
(I'll admit that your problem sounds different, but it was all I could
think of. My 4000 has worked quite robustly for almost a year now.)

I have 68040.library 37.10. I know the OS is pretty old itself.

don't rush to judgement, fellas, TCPro should work just fine in A4000/040
system – I've done it without problems. Perhaps just a ROM update is needed or
TC driver update, etc.

IMHO, trumpcard Pro works just fine on an A4000, one of the FEW older
controllers which does!

I have used the TCPro in a 4000 and it worked just fine. I think mine has IVS
Rom version 4.0 or 4.1. Can't see it right now, it's now in my A2000 since I
got a 4091 for the 4000.

Things are settling down here. I have found a bunch of things that helped
exagerate the problem. The Trumpcard seems to be holding its own for now.
