Does anyone know of a fairly simple way to make a 3d(extruded) logo out of a
scanned or .bmp image? Monochrome is fine. I would greatly appreciate any
suggestions. -Darin

A low cost way to appoach an extruded logo is to use the scan as a background
image in 3DS. In the 2D Shaper you will be able to trace over the logo and
then extrude the sucker in the Lofter. You may be able to make use of Corel
Trace which will automatically trace the outline of your scan and give you a 2D
.eps file which can be converted to a 2D .dxf or .ai file in Corel Draw.
Either of these two formats can be imported to the Shaper and then lofted. The
drawback in using Corel is that the autotrace may not be accurate enough for
you. So, you might spend a lot of time cleaning up the file. If you trace it
manually in 3DS then you control the accuracy and smoothness, probably the
method I would chose but the type and complexity of the logo will tell all.

Ted, Thanks for the reply. I just realized that it may possible to make an
opacity map of the scanned image and use that on top of a solid block, but I`m
not sure how well that would work. Any ideas? Thanks. -Darin

The results would be strange if the extrusion was much at all. Any parts of
the map that touched the outside edge of the box would show thickness, but
anything in the center would only appear as flat. If you apply the map to just
flat faces with no thickness it would work fine, but then it's only 2D.
There is a file in the libraries called DXFGIF or something like that which
will let you convert a gif file to dxf. That will, in effect, trace the logo
and you may then load it into the shaper and loft it in the lofter. Try a
library search using dxf as a keyword.
Also if you have access to Corel (not the newest release. I believe) there is
a function called Trace which will also give you a vector image of a bit map.
