Hello, I am Gaetan from faraway island state Mauritius. I am new to compuserve and I have come across your opinion on the Perception Video Recorder. As I am interested to invest in a non-linear online video editing board for the PC and you seem to be one of the lucky few to have actually ran the DPS PVR, I would much welcome a more elaborate comment. Thanks.

>>lucky few to have actually ran the DPS PVR Hello Gaetan, I hope that you use NTSC in Mauritius, since that's all that is available for a while. As a dealer I did get one of the first batch to use in my demo system and am starting to evaluate it. It took me a while to schedule switching my system from the venerable motherboard with full length ISA slots that I used for the PAR to a newer motherboard with full length PCI slots available for the PVR. It really does wipe out two full length slots -unless you manage to find a suitable motherboard with a full length shared ISA/PCI slot available. I don't have much of an archive of rendered animations in 720 x 480 resolution TGA files, so I am rerendering some sample 3DS files. So far the results are excellent. You expressed interest in it as a nonlinear editor. I've been using the component input and output and am very pleased with the quality and ability to work in a betacam environment without using transcoders, encoder/decoders, or dropping down to svideo or composite. I am not beta testing the new versions of RazorPro -so I can't use the direct support that software will provide, but I have been able to successfully use the DPS avi drivers to edit from within RazorPro 1.0f. Tomorrow I have some time scheduled to try some Animator Studio tests. Some people consider dealer's opinions to be a bit suspect, since we tend not to do actual prodution work in competition with our customers. And since I am just now getting boards into my customers hands, I have had limited feedback from them. I do know that this is a high quality and functional system now -and, I suspect that when the NT drivers come out and RazorPro NT ships, that it will really shine. When we get the Avid Media Suite Pro on the PC, then I will have to do some detailed comparisons in the editing realm. Until then, I think we have a clear price/performance leader. -Paul

Hi Paul Thanks for all the advice. From what I am gathering from this forum it seems that we are all expecting the PVR /NT version to really shine while also having the best price/performance ratio. However I may have to wait a while for a Pal version to be out as this is the standard over here. Interested to know more about your business. Gaetan

Gaetan, I checked with DPS recently regarding a PAL version and found out that it will be another year and more money than NTSC. If you have access to a good standards converter, I understand that many people edit in NTSC and then convert. You don't have to reply just to tell me how expensive those are -I know they are up there in price <G>. >>Interested to know more about your business I really should post something in the library about Rising Star Graphics. We've been in business for ten years selling computer graphics systems. Before that, I taught computer animation and imaging at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This is a good time for us -the digital video and multimedia markets are really trending towards our strengths. Good luck, Paul

OK Paul I'll be downtown on Tuesday. If you have the time let me know. It will have to be in the early afternoon. I am going to a Media 100 demo just for kicks. I have never seen the thing but I get some time off of work to go. So I am going.. Bob.

>>I'll be downtown on Tuesday. >>I am going to a Media 100 demo just for kicks. Bob, When you go to the Media 100 demo, say hi to almost everyone from the office for me. You're going to OUR demo! We're hosting it just for kicks <G>. I'd love for you to stop by, but with everyone at the Apple market center I'll have to check my schedule carefully. As long as you're in town you might want to check out the 3DS users group meeting at 6:30pm I'll call -Paul

Anybody already useing it. Is it as hot as they say ??<< I sold my PAR/TBCIV/2217 setup in April right after I saw the PVR at NAB. I haven't called for prices yet, but I figure they will be close to list since it is brand new. I'm going to try Digimation, SGS, and James Murphy. I'll send you what I find through email.
