#Silkscreen kits for CD's

Does anyone know if anyone sells kits that will allow you to label your own CD via silkscreen. I know there are companies that will do it for you, but are there products that will allow you to create your own designs and do it yourself?? Thanks.

Brian, There are indeed products that will allow you to label your own discs. The cheapest of course is a stick on label. For the silkscreen type effect (not really silkscreen at all) you can expect to spend about $5,500 for a good label setup. That's a lot of custom labels. Jerry Warner CD Solutions, Inc.

If you are the handy man type- there is one brand of standard off the shelf color inkjet printer you can buy. It has a straight paper path. You take it apart and separate the paper transfer mechanism from the print head by about 1/4 inch. Then build a carrier for CDs (1 flat sheet of thin cardboard laminated to another with a hole for a single CD). Total cost is $500 – $600. You get a nice Windows driver, and if you already have a DTP package you will be printing CDs in a few hours.

You can either purchase the special coated CD-Rs for writing, or try an art supply house for a can of spray sealer. It makes a nice, writeable, impervious coating.

I also assume you've got the fine tip out on that brush. <G> This seems to been an area where there hasn't been a lot of competition to date. There have only been a small few companies that made label machines for one-offs but as the one-off market continues to grow I think we'll see more competition and thus lower prices. Until then I think contracting to have someone else produce the custom labels is an excellent way to save money and still get great looking results. That's why we offer that service. Well, the Rimage printer gives a nice-looking, almost silkscreen effect with wax transfer technology, and I don't think it costs as much as $5K — probably closer to $3K, but still more than paper. If you don't mind using the "printable" media with the matte finish, CAI's bubblejet can print pretty well, too, for close to the same price (both of which I'm not really sure about — you can call a dealer to find real prices.) Kathy, The last time I priced the Rimage printer (about two weeks ago) the price was $5500 and they were selling them as fast as they could make them. As you say however, "you can call a dealer to find real prices." Jerry Warner CD Solutions, Inc.
