#Mitsumi FX400 problems

Help!
I recently purchased a Mitsumi FX400 CD-ROM drive and I'm having all kinds of
problems with it. I THINK I have it set up right ( there was no documentation
included) but I'm having a very difficult time with the CDs. Some read, some
don't. Some read the root directory, but lock up in a subdirectory. Sometimes
it will read a specific disc and then later won't recognise it at all. Is the
problem likely to be the drive, the setup, or the discs? Also, I get no sound
from headphones plugged in to the drive, just a hum, even though sound comes
out of the speakers plugged in to the Soundblaster Pro sound card.
Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated, even a nudge in any direction,
as I am about ready to pitch the whole mess.

Don't chuck it yet, Lloyd.<g> You might want to start by obtaining the missing
documentation from Mitsumi. 408-970-0700 is their tech support number, or
there might be something on-line on their BBS at 408-970-0761 (but don't count
on that!)
Many installation problems are actually caused by underlying system problems
that manifest themselves when a new, very demanding gizmo like a CDROM is
installed. For background and a lot of tips, including extensive material
about the lack of sound, please download file Laser3.txt from the CDROM Forum
library (GO CDFORUM).

Thanks Kevin, I'll look for that file. I've already contacted the tech support
people at the store I purchased it from, and they seem to think it might be the
drive that is defective. I hope that's all it is, but I'm afraid my system (an
"older" 486-33) might not be up to the task of a quad speed CD-ROM. Anyway,
they asked me to send it in, so hopefully I'll know in a couple of days.

I have been having the EXACT same problems with my Mitsumi.
Some disks read-some don't-sometimes one will and later it will not. I have
had the drive replaced 3 times in the last month!!!! Every time the drive is
replaced it works for about a week and then does the exact same thing.
I think I can rule out your 486 as I have encountered the problems on a
486-80 and Pentium 100. My local store is starting to doubt me but they can't
explain why a new drive fixes it for awhile. I can take the same CD's to
another machine and they work fine. Let me know if you encounter any fixes, I
am really starting to regret buying a mitsumi.
