#un-Welded Vertices
17 messages in this thread
Hi Guys,
Quick question,
I have been importing text from Corel 3 (& I tried ver5) into 3DS.
I have been exporting in both DXF and Adobe AI format (exported as
Adobe 88 format & as curves) as stated in 3D Artist by
Alan "we are not worthy" Iglesias – Hi Alan! <g>
The question is easy – any easy way to automatically detect which
vertices are not welded

Either select by element, or move a vertex so you can see which faces get
pulled with it and cancle out of the command.

ThanX Phillip,
That's what I've been doin', but it gets a bit annoying
with some type faces and larger amounts of text…Errrr
PS Really liked your book

Hi Garry,
The best and fastest way I think is to select all the elements and use
MODIFY/VERTEX/WELD SELECTED… does them all in one step… Then you can ASSIGN
all elements and use CHECK to see which segments are crossed over… another
handy thing is to use for searching for unconnected vertices is DISPLAY FIRST
ON, that will show you were a break is… But with the first method, it pretty
much takes care of everything…

Hi John,
That sounds like a great idea…I'll go and give it a shot

Hi again,
>> That sounds like a great idea… <<
Not only that but it works great too! I've done alot of these conversions and
moving elements just didn't cut it… so after thinking about it awhile and as
I use that feature in 3D Build all the time, I thought why not… sure
enough… works terrific… and of course if you have a problem I'm sure you
know that all you have to do is, change the weld threshold to a higher or lower
value or scale up the shape, and that should do the trick… its an incredible
time saver… (glad they put that weld feature in there… I don't think it was
in R2… )
So I guess I did get the question right… not always sure… 🙂
John
I guess I didn't answer the question I thought you were asking, which was if
you have disjointed vertices how to find them and close them all… the method
of using display first helps find them as each segment will have a start point
which can be identified…
John
ThanX John,
I'll check it out – some really weird things happen with this clients fonts /
Logo …Errrr

and ThanX again
Garry,

A couple of tips that might help;
If you break up the design in Corel into smaller elements where they might
overlap and import them individually that might help. Sometimes
vertices/segments cross over boundaries making a mess of things.
The other thing is to keep steps at 10, as then its much less likely that
vertices will attach incorrectly.
Not much else I can add except, maybe get a new client. <G>

Hi John,
<J>Sometimes vertices/segments cross over boundaries making a mess of things.
GH> Now there's an understatement. It's a pretty complex logo….There is a
utilies which convets True Type fonts to DXF object (with auto beveling) might
check it out

ThanX for the tips! GH
Gary,

I wonder about the auto beveling not further complicating things but I'd be
interested in hearing more about the utility…

In that case "Viva la challenge"! ;^)

GH>>It called tt20bt.zip..the shareware version dos'ent do vowels
and the mashes is a bit faceted, but it's OK…quick and you can fix up any
gliches…When 3DS is on NT (slow, boring and hardware intensive) I suspect
this feature will be builtin….Oh well I'll be able to "cut-n-paste" my 32 bit
targa into word! – Go figure!

I've heard the water in the tub "downunder" spins in a clockwise direction as
well… <g>
This is my attempt at humor, because contrary to your observations about NT, I
find it blistering fast, and exciting…. though I have to agree it is quite
RAM intensive… but for instance the DX-2 Server is much faster under NT than
DOS/Win… the Pentiums are so fast to begin with I'm not sure but they do seem
to run as if there getting a fresh supply of oxygen. I have heard that with
mutiple apps open they can really bog down… but so far that hasn't been the
case for me… (though I do trust that this is true as I have no reason to
disbelieve the source on this…)
With regard to "cut-n-paste" you can do that presently in Win 3.1 but from
everything I've been able to track down on this point, in NT the Targa won't
have this global feature but will be application dependent… if you know
different I'd sure like to follow up on it…
So I guess it follows that at the equator the water runs in neither direction
but straight down… <G>
John
Hi John,
Ani>"because contrary to your observations about NT, I find it blistering fast,

GH> Do you shares in RAM production?

GH>Sorry this was a joke..Why would you want to take a complex image into an
already sloowwwww doc like Word or any other WINDOZE app.
We are running 15 (networked) 486 Dx2 – 66's with 32 each…and Win3.11 IS
slower than DOS we have just got NT and are running it on an DEC alpha with 32
and so far I still waiting to see the blisting pace…although it's always hot
downunder, thank God for the water running in the other direction . <g>

PMFJI guys, but…
Garry, have you had any luck using Corel5's DXF filter? Everytime I try it, I
get a "No 2D objects" or "No 3D objects" error. Probably I'm doing something
dumb, in which case take the opportunity to set me on the straight 'n narrow,
because I think I may prefer to use DXF if poss, in order to avoid Corels AI
filter breaking text into a top and a bottom, 'cause it don't like creating
things with holes in.
Yeah okay, the water goes straight down the drain at the equator _but_ John, do
you northern hemisphere dudes see the man in the moon the same way up as we do?
I don' tknow how many people I've asked (keep forgetting to check it out,
myself) but I can argue reasons for it being the same way up and upside down!
Check it out and get back to me!
Laurie
Laurie, what exactly is your problem concerning .AI output fron CorelDraw5?
It's "breaking holes" in your text?
I'm still using 4 and find the DXF export pretty unusable. The .AI works well
with a little vertex welding in the Shaper, but you sound like you're having a
bigger problem.
Maybe we can fix this "hole" problem. <g>
-Alan
Hi Laurie,
Yeah I've tried Corel 5 ..I think your problem is the logo or text you are
trying to export is on the desktop layer, not on layer 1. Therefore, the it
looks OK however when you export it Corel looks at layer 1, see's nothing and
you get this error…try moving your logo or text from the desktop layer to
layer 1…I had this problem toooooo….EEErrrrr
hope it helps
