#Rendering to Video

Hi all
I want to render my animation to a video tape. My question ist can I produce an
animation in TRUECOLOUR to a video using e.g. with an digital
harddisk-videorecorder like > miroVIDEO DC20 pro < in combination with a
normal VHS video or must i definetly use a special videorecorder with
singleframe recording ?
With the card I mentioned above, is it possibly to render directly with the
command : Render/VTR Control/Record ?
I'm not sure because I think 3DS must support the card or otherwise with the
device like VTPADI 4.1/4.2 ?
Or is it only possible to transfer flic-animation to the video tape with such a
card ? And then I only have 256 colour on the tape ?
Is the > Personal Animation Recorder DR-3100 < a single frame recorder or is it
a better card like zhe miro ? What is the difference ?

I don't know much about the Miro board but I know that since Adobe's Premiere
was bundled with it a bunch of folks have 'em. You could find out more info
about the board in the ADOBEAPP forum if no Miro users come to your aid here.
If the Miro board is anything like the PAR you will not need a frame accurate
video tape recorder. The PAR sends out a signal which you can easily record on
any VCR which you may have available. The output is broadcast quality and is
in 24 bit color. The PAR uses data compression, a dedicated IDE hard drive and
uses an image size of 752×480 with an aspect ratio of .851.
When rendering to the PAR you render your animations to a series of sequential
tga files. There is no need to use Render/VTR Control/Record. 3DS will see a
new drive letter which will be the drive attached to the PAR, you can render
directly to that drive with one machine or use the PAR interface software to
collect frames from a networked server drive where your networked render slaves
dump all of their frames.

called the Animation Xpress, which is a digital animation recorder. It
features a direct connection to 3D Studio, and it plays back broadcast-quality
animations directly from hard disk in real time, at a resolution of 720X486, 30
frames(60 fields ) per second.

We are currently using a Matrox 2300 system and are looking to output animation
frames and Photoshop-originated frames to tape without having to import them
into the studio as clips (to avoid a noticable compression loss). We have
Panasonic MII machines and a RS-422 VTR controller (part of the SYS-2300) and
thus far have not found a solution.
Is there a 3rd party package or component we can get, other than the obvious
MAX (Matrox Animation Express)…

Have you tried or looked into SoftVTR? I can post a number or address if you
haven't… Its a software based frame by frame solution, don't know if it'll
work with the SYS-3000…

I would be much obliged if you could post some information about SoftVTR.
We had heard of SoftVTR actually from the TS at Matrox, but the really couldn't
give us a manufacturer, price, or anything beyond the name. If you could post
the manufactureer name or any other pertinent info about it, I would appreciate
it.

Hi Tom,
The parent company of SoftVTR is called Moonlight Productions and their number
is 619-625-0300. When you call if you push 9 you'll get the operator and she
can send you literature on their product… or you can talk with sales at ext 3
about specifics…
Hope it works for you, its a good solution and fairly reasonable compared with
the alternatives…

Technical support informed me of a third-party software called Soft VTR, which
enables you to control your VTR's from within 3D Studio, and export directly to
tape.
You should check with Adobe to see if this software is compatible with
Photoshop.
As for other products, a computer dealer or Adobe may be able to suggest some
more.
