#Tablet lockup

I'm using a Summagraphics Summa Sketch Plus with 3DS 3.0. Since I do CAD for a
living, I prefer a tablet over a mouse. It seems that the tablet is sending
information to fast to the program. Sometimes the computer will hang up, and if
I wait for about 5 minutes, the program will resume working. This happens
mostly when I'm adjusting a spline in the shaper, when you have to hold down
the button while your adjusting. Is there a way to slow down the rate of info,
or am I looking in the wrong direction?

It is best to use Mouse Emulation Mode for 3DS if at all possible. If you must
work in Tablet Mode, then be certain to use the built in Summa drivers rather
than the ADI drivers. There are some known glitches with the ADI driver, since
it is designed for AutoCAD not 3DS. Let me know if you need more details.

I get the same thing with a Summa II and 3DSr3. It makes rotations kinda
tough.<g> There's a text file in the libraries here concerning the Summa ADI
driver. It may be of some help to you or least offer an explaination (I don't
remember the filename but, try a keyword search for SUMMA).
As far I know, there isn't any definitive solution to using the Summa in
tablet mode with 3DS. There's a few hitches I've learned to live with…
1.) When the tablet hangs, power it off then on. Your cursor comes right back.
2.) Occasionally, for some unknown reason(s), there is no cursor/tablet
available upon starting 3DS, even though the 3DS.SET and 3DS.PRJ files are
correct. If you configure the tablet area within 3DS ("*" then "A"), then exit
the dialogue box with a CR (ENTER key), the tablet works fine until it
hangs(see #1).
3.) Use the keyframer (at frame 0) to rotate objects or enlarge the active
viewport and rotate incrementally to the desired angle.

I've been told that this feature is intended ONLY for the built in driver and
not for the ADI driver. (Yet another reason to avoid the ADI drivers.)

Thanks for writing back. Your remark about using the tablet in Mouse Emulation
Mode made me think about the the tablet drivers supplied with the tablet.
There is a MS Mouse driver that can be loaded with various settings for
resolution and acceleration, among other things. I loaded this driver first,
set 3DS for a MS Mouse, and after a little back and forth adjustment, got the
tablet to work without hanging up my sessions in the shaper or lofter modules,
which is were it seemed to happen the most. As my testing had only been for
about an hour, I can't say whether or not this has actually cured my problems.
After a good long editing session, I'll know for sure. So, for anyone else
with this problem, I used the "tablet.com" driver set to operate in "relative"
mode with hor. and vert. sensetivity set to 75, and set with no acceleration.
I haven't tried "absolute mode" yet, but will after I'm sure things are working
OK.

I've never heard that and never had any problems configuring size either. So,
I guess I'll keep on enjoying my tablet until r5 comes out…
