#Wintab driver problem

When I run animator studio it changes the response of my Calcomp drawing board
II graphics pad from the absolute mode to a wild relative mode that is
unusable. Even after I exit Animator studio this problem remains until I
restart windows. Please let me know if there is some setting I can change to
correct this. None of my other graphical applications (photoshop, painter,
etc.) have this problem.

i spoke to Calcomp about this at AEC Systems… they have not written a
specific driver for AStudio (in fact, AStudio was a surprise to them), and the
techies there at the show suspected the Wintab driver or altenrative driver as
a possible culprit. i have used DrawingBoard and DrawingPad with AniPro and
AStudio with reliability only using the CCMOUSE or similar mouse emulation
which (as you say) is a rather "wild" relative mode. However, Calcomp
"authorities" are anxious to jump on this (especially since they have those big
12×12 pressure sensitive tablets which would be a godsend for those of us that
to traditional freehand animation), so it may be soon that we see direct
support from calcomp for this problem.
Most of the tablet support i've seen for AStudio has been severely (in fact
dangerously so) focused on WACOM only. WACOM's a great little board, but it's
size is a real minus for larger animation methods. keep in mind that Calcomp
has that new pressure sensitive stylus for their 12×12 pads too… you may wish
to approach AStudio product manager for petition of better support. this kind
of thing drives development of drivers. 😉
you have my vote as i'm an old timer on calcomp products.

If I reduce the resolution on my drawing board to the minimum, the ride is not
so wild. I still hate using the relative mode, especially when I run out of
board space in the middle of a stroke. I don't think it is a Calcomp problem
though. Animator studio is getting the pressure information but is changing the
scaling and the mode of the wintab driver. This is the only windows application
out of about a hundred that does this.

same here. absolute mode is definitely what i need for traces off my
pencilings… digitized takeoffs by any other name.

i'll forward this to tech support… see what they come up with. thanks for
this information. i have an equal interest in finding out what the cause is. 😉

Dave, I don't understand what your talking about here, Don't you know that
WACOM has 12 x 12 Pressure Sensative Tablets with 4 and 15 button cursors, I
happen to have one attatched to one of our workstations in the other room.
They also make 12 x 18 and 18 x 15 inch tablets.
What am I missing?

every one i've seen though uses relative mode (i need absolute) and comes with
cursors, not pressure sensitive _stylus_. it's hard to explain, but there's
definitely a different feel to the stylus being pressure sensitive than the
board being pressure sensitive…. have you used a pressure sensitive stylus
before? just curious.
also, do you find cursors difficult to draw freehand with? regarding the size
issue, i was not aware that they had 12×18 and 18×15 sized tablets.. only seen
their 12x12s… and 12×18 is the drawingboard size i have (and boy do those
extra inches help!) <g> is this a new model/make or am i just falling behind on
WACOM again?
just when i think i've caught up with the software, the hardware races past me.

That may have been a preference of whomever set up the tablet. The drivers
allow for both Absolute and Relative in fact you can control the different
areas of the tablet you want to make active and even turn the tablet around 180
degrees and configure it upside down if you want. Wacom's drivers allow for a
great deal of lattitude in the amount of pressure and ever a "pressure curve"
that is you can adjust the tablet to respond to the specifif way you personally
use pressure while holding the pen. I use the pressure sensative pen most of
the time. The only reason I've got the 4 button cursor is for my Autocad
freinds that want to do something with the tablet overlay in Autocad on this
particular workstation.

Don't misunderstand me here dave but you seem to be going out of your way to
make it look as if the WACOM tablet can only be used with a cursor.. that is
not how 99% of the People who buy these tablets use them.
The Whole Point of the Wacom tablet was it's pressure sensative
Wireless/Batteryless Pen!

I'm Sure they'll be At Siggraph again this year, you might want to check them
out.
As far as the Calcomp Tablet goes I didn't like the textured surface they put
on the ones I tried, It felt like I was trying to draw over tiny speed bumps.
The Wacom glides nice and smooth and very quite. No SpeedBumps…<g>
You really should check the Wacom tablets out, I'm not trying to promote them
per se' I just happen to enjoy using them.

guess i'd better give WACOM a call and get some updates then. very greatful for
this info, Murph. i also relied heavily on what the reps at the last two shows
told me about these tablets… i've known about "regions" ability, but this
seriously is the first i've heard of reliable absolute mode… which is crucial
for my work.

well, let me clear the air of that as quickly as possible. my goal is to know
every option at my disposal. <g> when i've spoken with reps from WACOM about my
options (and had them send me drivers), i've been assured of certain modalities
and capabilities which weren't there in what they sent me. if the info has
changed in the last 6 months, i probably ought to get on the ball and find out
what's new.

it.

i will. not too long of a wait either. 🙂 i've checked WACOM tablets out, but i
guess it time again to check WACOM tablets out.

My wintab driver also has the same problem using a Summagraphics II Pro. this
is a major pain in the a__. I hope this problem is fixed soon.
