#AniStudio Disappointment
43 messages in this thread
Hi,
<Sysop, please do not be offended by this message, I realize you didn't write
the software. Please forward it to Autodesk.>
I faxed in the card to receive my Animator Studio Demo CD May 26, the deadline
for the Autodesk special upgrade price was June 25, the CD when it finally
arrived was post-marked June 28. I ordered the software anyway, assuming that
since it was an Autodesk product it would be good. I already have numerous
Autodesk products (3DS1, 3DS2, Animator 1, AniPro 1, AniPro 1.3). I received
Studio yesterday and installed it onto my main animation and rendering station.
Everything installed fine, but after using the program for just a few hours, it
had a very "unfinished" feeling. I have a list of bugs and problems here that
fills nearly two pages. Everything from spelling mistakes in the on-line help;
inconsistencies across the apps; controls not re-painting correctly; functions
not working correctly when certain mouse events occur; plus numerous others too
long to list here. Not being one to fly off the handle without proper testing,
I installed it on another of my systems with a different hardware
configuration, and the same problems existed. The two systems are: 486/486,
32MB/16MB RAM, 720/420 HD, ATI Mach 32/ATI Wonder XL24, Win3.11/Win3.11,
Cardinal DSP16/Creative Blaster Pro.
I hope Autodesk is planning on sending out a free upgrade when they get the
applications completed. If I were Autodesk, I would not have put my name on
this product and released it yet. In its current state I would not recommend
it to any of my peers. The only reason I am going to keep this copy is so that
I can maintain my upgrade qualification status from AniPro.
Thanks,
David R. Green

will do. thanks.

I know what you mean – the whole thing seems rather …. errr….
ummm… "Corel" !!!!
P.
Paul,
I like a lot of the ideas in the interface, features, capabilities, etc. It
just has too many bugs and unfinished things.
David
That's exactly what I meant.
P.
I find the performance incredibly poor. I agree that Autodesk should have put
in more development and testing time. Yes they are getting like Corel!
Laurence
>> "I find the performance incredibly poor."
That's an understatement! I just got the list of individuals who
tested AAS. It reads thusly…
5 flatulent chimps
the winner of the 1972 Special Olympics
and a stunt hen trained to peck at radar blips in a WW2 German bomb…
BOY, AM I ANGRY!!! 😉
I'm sure Autodesk will release a patch. I think… I hope… I don't
know…
Thanks for reading…
Juan
P.S. I called my retailer and they said if people complain enough
Autodesk will comply faster. SO KEEP COMPLAINING!!!
Our company writes Windows based software and there are only 12 of us. Its
very complicated modeling and simulation software involving lots of processing
power and I/O – even we are better than AStudio in performance and testing.
I think ADESK should gulp and make a effort to make ammends quickly before the
bad word-of-mouth gains too much momentum. They could never recover.
I'm off to visit Gold Disk.
Laurence
I agree this program is a mess! I'm hoping they fix it fast. If you check your
customer service & tech support card you will see you have 60 days to get a
full refund. This is what I'm going to do if they don't fix this quickly
Lu
I was considering purchasing AniStudio sometime in the future… but
considering all the complaints here and in the 3ds Internet Usegroups
I will think again…
>> I was considering purchasing AniStudio sometime in the future…

Usegroups I will think again… <<
just a minor note… more than 30% of the complaints i see there and
here are that users can't get Animator Studio to run under NT or
Win95. the program was written specifically for Windows 3.1, and many
of the problems that have cropped up have also resulted from improper
configurations, underpowered systems and faulty drivers.
Animator Studio has some problems too (as all software does in its
first release), but these are being resolved and fixes will be
available shortly.
<< That's an understatement! I just got the list of individuals who tested

You really shouldn't make comments like this. I'd like to see you write a big
program… If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything,
okay?
Mark
Hey Mark,
>>If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything, okay?<<
What can I say, I'm a bitter person. 🙂 Acually, if you shelled out
big money for a package and totally relied on it for all your future projects
only to have it riddled with bugs as well as slow than you'd be a tad upset,
too. I promised my bosses and co-workers I'd have a fully hand-drawn animation
for a product and now I have to go to them and say, "Oh, sorry guys, I can't
have it done." I LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT! OF COURSE I'M MAD!!!! Sorry, Mark, I'm
yelling again…(take your pill, Juan, count to ten) <G>
>>I'd like to see you write a big program… <<
I've done some programming and I know it's difficult, (especially when
your writing in TASM 8088) 🙂 That's why I don't program. …It sounds like
I've touch a nerve there, Mark… Is there something you're not telling me?
Did you write AAS? Say it, Mark! YOU wrote AAS. SAY IT. SAY IT!!! <G> If I
could program I'd write my own animation package. Alas, the gods once again
poop on my head.
If you didn't laugh at that message than what can I tell you. A little
humor for a serious situation… A lot of people know of the problem and I'm
sure they'll fix it soon. Acually, Mark, didn't we discuss animation packages
awhile ago in some other forum? I think it was the Computer Animation Forum.
I don't remember. Anyway, Mark, I gotta' go.
Take it easy,
Juan
Juan,
<< Acually, if you shelled out big money for a package and totally relied on it
for all your future projects only to have it riddled with bugs as well as slow
than you'd be a tad upset, too. >>
Yes I but when I buy software that costs a lot of money I try my best to see if
other people think it's a good package or not.
<< Did you write AAS? >>
Nope, and I'm not affiliated with Autodesk.
Mark
Hey Mark,
>>Yes I but when I buy software that costs a lot of money I try my best to see
if other people think it's a good package or not. <<
That's a good point, Mark, but what alteratives do I have? Go back to
DAS? or maybe Dr. Halo? Remember Dr. Halo? God, I hated that package, (but at
least it worked) :). Anyway, Mark, I'm not here to make enemies, I just want
the problem resolved.
I remember when I first was thinking of getting 3DS; people ware
telling me, "Oh, don't get that, it's crap", or, "It's too expensive, get
something else". In my opinion, 3DS is the best 3D animation package for PC.
People always have an opinion of software and the only way to be sure if it's
any good is to try for yourself. Believe me, I tried it the hard way. I know
what you might say, "Well some people may like AAS and your opinion means
sqwat"… My only response to that would be for anyone and everyone who thinks
AAS is acceptible and is acually producing work on it to come forward and tell
us how. I would like to hear your opinions.
My personal experience involved attempting to draw one frame of an
animation then moving the image over a bit because it was off center. The
result was a system error and my entire computer froze-up. I couldn't even
'ctrl-alt-del' it was that bad. Not giving up faith, I tried again, only
resulting in a crash once more. Getting fustrated, I attempted again, being
more patient and not making any cuts or moves. Things were going well when all
of a sudden I get this 'FLIPPER' thing and the program crashes again. What
burned me up is that I didn't save my work. So I wasted half a day's work and
no results but me getting pissed off.
Well Mark, there you have it. My little story. I hope you can see my
position here.
Take it easy,
Juan
An animator
Hi Mark,
You should have seen Juan's message by now. I understand why so many people are
upset, especially when they rely on good tools to make a living. I was
extremely frustrated a while ago trying to convert *.flc or *.tga series to
*.mov. The color quality of those converted *.mov files was lot worse than the
original files. This may not be a bug, maybe just the selection of the
compression schemes. At the same time, I also understand it is not easy to
write a big program. I am a programmer myself. If you are one of the
programmers who wrote AS, just do your best to get problems fixed. I believe
you guys have the capability to come up with a great product. Remeber, lot of
people depend on this product. Thanks for listening.
Mike LIU
Mike,
<< If you are one of the programmers who wrote AAS >>
No I did not write it and I'm not affiliated with Autodesk.
Mark
I think we have a right to complain. $300.00 is a lot of money for an upgrade.
Over half the cost of the program and then they want $20.00 extra for a manual.
Lu
Lu,
<< I think we have a right to complain. >>
Yes but it depends on how you make the complaint.
<< they want $20.00 extra for a manual. >>
I believe that's old info, the manual is now free.
Mark
The manual is NOW FREE if you know about it on CIS. I know of people who are
not on CIS who have paid for it – and I haven't heard that Autodesk is going to
offer them a refund either!
Judy
"The manual is NOW FREE if you know about it on CIS. I know of people
who are not on CIS who have paid for it – and I haven't heard that
Autodesk is going to offer them a refund either!"
I looked for orders for the manual and have only found one $19 order.
The customer had already been refunded. Yes, Autodesk IS refunding
anyone who paid!
Who are you the Animator Studio "thought police"? If someone has a problem with
an Autodesk product or it doesn't meet customer expectations, they should speak
up and say so. Animator Studio has certainly failed many of its purchasers in
this respect. It has all the earmarks of a program that went to market too
soon!
Improvements and changes to a large part are a product of customer expectations
and needs.
Large cheering sections only encourage a progress rate of a turtle and smug,
self-satisfaction.
Judy
YOU TELL 'EM, JUDY!! Give 'em a left and a right! That oughta' learn
'em…<G>
I keep coming on here to see if there's any news from Autodesk about a
patch or something. By the way, that's a smart idea with the true-color
AniPro… they already have the drivers…they already have the
program…What's the problem?
Juan
P.S. I'm sure I'm gonna hear some people whining about 'new OS' and 'viva
Windows' B.S. but guess what, at least AA worked.
I agree with you – I personally never understood why they just couldn't make
the change to AA which so many people really like and used a great deal. AAS
just isn't even half as good as AA and I find myself using AA instead of AAS.
But like you I have never seen anything about "fixes" to AAS.
Judy
>> By the way, that's a smart idea with the true-color AniPro… they already

Am I understanding this correctly, there are true colour drivers for anipro-
where can I get them or who should I hassle at autodesk for a release? thanks
in advance for any reponse.

"…any news from Autodesk about a patch or something."
Hi Juan,
I believe that an announcement is pending – this week is my understanding. I
hope so – this thread is showing some strong unhappiness.
" By the way, that's a smart idea with the true-color AniPro… they already
have the drivers…they already have the program…What's the problem?"
I missed the part about true color drivers, so I can't fully comment
on that. I know that Autodesk doesn't have any for AAPro. As far as
rewriting AAPro, it was looked at and the option was finally
discarded (and thus AAStudio was born). The decision came down to
this: rewrite AAPro almost completely, to support True color, or
write a new product that supports True color & Windows. (Windows
support was the 2nd biggest customer request after True color
support.)
Judy,
<< If someone has a problem with an Autodesk product or it doesn't meet
customer expectations, they should speak up and say so. >>
You are correct, but it depends on how you say it.
Mark
If the company does not respond to customer dissatisfaction early on in the
process, complaints gets nastier and with a good reason!
Judy
As much as I love Autodesk software I have to agree it is a dog my bigget fear
is that the same thing may happen to 3Ds. I knew when animator went to
windows this might happen it is truly sad,,,,,, Im selling my copy of
Animation Studio now…..
Harry D.
Why don't you just return it. If you sell it somebody is going to be real mad
at you!
Hi I ..
Because someone eles may like it , It may be that after all the
years I have used Ani Pro that Im spoiled .Animator Studio does lots of nice
things but it is ti slow for me . But then as far as Im concerned every thing
that runs under windows is to slow<g>….

you're not the only one. sucker's fast.
-dave
Certainly they would have been better off to just add true color support to
AniPro – which still remains a superior product and far, far better than
Animator Studio.
YOu are definitely right the move to Windows killed it!
Judy
Thank you…
I was starting to think I was the only one that was disapointed<g>
but I think the gripes are going to come hot and heavy now…
Harry D
I hope so, since that is the only way that changes will ever be made and
product improvement take place.
Unfortunately I expect that complaints and unhappiness from non-CIS users will
never reach Autodesk's ears. I suspect that the indication will be in dwindling
sales!

Not entirely true (fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you
look at it) — users on Internet 3DS usegroups are complaining as
well. More grist to the mill.
Well, I agree with what has been said but I might add that I think the overall
design of the program is far cry from Animator Pro. I reall really don't even
want a patch, its really not worth it. I originally bought Animator and Apro
and was dazzled by its capabilities. One c could create just about anything
with all of its tools and combinations. This program, although having Inks and
Effects is so cumbersome a and slow to use all creative energy becomes lost. I
have a Pentium 120 with a Mach 64 card 32 megs of EDO memory and Vram on the
graphics card. Even with this configuration the program stalls, crashes, locks
and pisses me off. No! It goes back for good. Try Winimages FX a great
program which has much of the effects and a whole lot more of Astudio. I can't
believe they released this. I create animations fro a living and have to have
fluid performance-like I got from Apro-even in 256 colrs. Thanks for listening
Hi Steven,
What is WinImagesFX? Does it do onion-skinnig? If not, is there
something else that does onion-skinning besides DAS (and, oh yeah, AAS)?
Juan
Juan
Corel 5.0 has a module called CorelMOVE that does onion skins, 256 colors only
Al

Corel's products used to play with the palettes. I remember modifying a .PCX
file and the save it out again as a .PCX file. The palette had changed. I
wasn't real happy with that.

Randy
I've been using MOVE to create individual scenes and then editing them together
in Adobe Premiere. So far, I haven't noticed any particular color changes. When
you finish a scene you render it to an AVI file, or to a series of sequential
bitmaps. I just got a copy of Animator Studio to review and while it looks
feature packed, it is much more quirky in the way you create sprites and mix
files. Move has less bells and whistles, but is VERY straightforward using
actors, backgrounds and props. The backgrounds can be any bitmap, the props and
actors created in the drawing/editing popup or imported from a file. (clipart,
other bitmaps, etc.) It uses a path with nodes to create motion around the
screen. There is a cell sequencer rollup that allows you to change the size of
your actors and create different cell orders. You can draw your cells out of
sequence and then order them any way you want. This is great for things like
talking where you can use a handful of mouth motions mixed up to create
sentences. The sound and transition editing leaves a lot to be desired though.
I use Quad studio to mix voices, voiceovers, sound effects and music into
tracks to be assembled in Premiere.
By the way, I've been following the tutorials with AS, I get the funkiest
results when I try to paste the splash into the diver animation. Looks like the
drops are half cut off and gall of them go vertically up in a single
fountain-like spurt only relatively near the area I placed the clip. Anyone
have anything like this? I'm admitedly new to the program, but 4 or 5 tries
resulted in the same thing! Not a good start to the review process…..
Al
I am glad that the Corel products are working well for you. The problems that
i have had mostly occurred while using CorelPaint (the one that comes with the
Corel 5.0 bundle, not the stand-alone copy) and then going into other low end
paint apps. Maybe apps like Adobe Premiere and Photoshop handle the Corel
files better.
BTW, were these 256 color images or 24-bit images you were working with? Ours
were 256 color images.
Randy
That's a shame – I had high hopes for AniStudio 🙁
