Is there a way for 3D Studio to produce "panoramic pictures" for use with Quicktime VR? I've read that some 3D programs can produce the 360-degree scenes in the correct format for Q-VR. I know that the Q-VR authoring tools come with a way to stitch individual renders together, but that is time consuming. I'm looking for an IPAS plug-in or some other way to get 3D Studio to produce these 360-degree images, similar to those produced with a panoramic camera. Rich 72630,2131

Everyone I know who's been using QVR with 3D programs uses the stitching method with individual images. I've seen some of the results and they're pretty impressive. – G

Ditto. Right now we are taking thirty-six, 10 degree slices and butting them together by eye in Photoshop. On the plus side, this seems to bypass the time and memory intensive 'stitching' process. Still, rendering once in 360 degrees would be better. BTW, the results we achieved were wonderful!

This sounds interesting. Where do you get the QT VR tools/viewer- from Apple, or is it a freebee? JNJ

The developer package comes from Apple. It is $495 plus another $200 for those who don't have the MPW upgrade (even more for MPW (Macintosh Programmers Workshop) if you don't have that). This gives you what you need to stitch together 12 images (scanned photos or rendered images) into a warped panorama. This is diced into a QTVR movie you can wrap up in Director scripts for Mac or PC. My problem is getting 3DS to render the images for stitching. BTW, stitching takes a 40 meg Mac (Power PC preferred). Stictching takes about 20 minutes (so I am told).

Thanks for the info. I'm suprised the stitching tools aren't given out for anyone to play with QT VR.. along with a basic viewer. It'd be cool if 3DS would have a panoramic render option to make those types of files.. that would be great. Well, since I don't really need that right now, I'll save my money. 🙂 I don't think they'll release NT versions of the tool for a while either. <g> JNJ

PMJI, but I just downloaded the Windows player for QTVR from Internet and it looks like for some purposes it could be a nice presentation tool. Gary, do you happen to have the developer kit for QTVR? If so, did you manage to stitch 3DS images together?….Uh, I'd have a couple of more questions…. – Alexander.

Where did you DL player from? Apple's QTVR Web Site? Yes, my programmer in Central California has our copy of the QTVR developer kit. He doesn't have a Power PC so he hasn't started stitching yet (CPU intensive task that takes about 10-20 minutes and 40 Megabytes of RAM). What we have done is generate 36 – 10 degree slices from renderings of a room and "butted" them together. The result works fine, but ultimately not as smooth as using the stitcher. I have another person who will be stitching our first 3DS files next week. These will be 12 images of 30 degrees or so each (stitcher needs some overlapping to work). Hope this helps.

Gary: >> Where did you DL player from? Apple's QTVR Web Site? << Right from there, something like $ 14.95 via Virtual Money (or the like…) Thanks for your reply. See my e-mail also. – Alexander.
