#Un-wrap the world
5 messages in this thread
A client of mine has asked for an effect!!.
The old spinning globe un-folding into a flat map.
I have got quite a few nice images to use as texture maps
for the spinning globe. But how do I un-fold it to show a
complete world map.
Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Un-wrap the world.
Done it.
In 3DS make a 30 x 60 flat grid. – 0bject01
Next latch to 1/2 (30 points) of a 60 sided circle and extrude 60 – Object02
take arc from extrusion, ofset a touch so that when you do a surf-rev you have
a tiny hole at the top & bottom of your 359.99 degree 60 sided sphere –
Object03
Acurately map Object01 (you need the right map) & morph away.
Not as versatile as Wavefronts keyframe deformations but does the job.
Alternately add a reverse set of polys to each obj & split world open to reveal
any interior map.
Good luck

HUH???!!!???
Sorry, but you kind of lost me on the wording….

It seems to me he is suggesting creating two vertice-identical objects by
sweeping a line two different ways.
The first is a vertical line swept along a striaght line to create a grid (ie,
grids.pxp maybe?)
The second is a curved version of the vertical line (by using an arc) and
sweeping it in a surface revolution to create a sphere.
This is a neat tip as it suggests an implicit relation between two peices of
geometry. Use of this approach could be used to create a myriad of
sophisticated morphs. The only minor diffuculty I see is that the lofter
requires closed curves. Could be easily done in your average 3D CAD package,
though.

Gotcha….I'll have to give it a try.
