I work in a Utilities IS/IT department serving several engineering departments.
We've recently started a CAD users group with one of the first requests being
to standardize our graphics adapters (or at least make recommendations to
such). Our workstations usually consist of 486-66 to P5-90's with Nanao
Monitors and a plethera of graphics adapters including Diamond, ATI, Matrox and
Miro (ISA, VESA, and PCI). All departments have expressed a need for
standardization but none will agree to any specifics (surprise, surprise);->
We would greatly appreciate any recommendations and/or references to any
graphics hardware evaluations.

What OS are you running on and what OS do you plan to run on in the next year
or so?

We're currently running Windows 3.11 and WFW 3.11. The engineering
departments are looking to utilize Windows 95 by March of next year – depending
on how things go between Sept 95' to Dec 95'. We hope to start using Autocad 13
by Nov 95'.

I've played around with several cards over the past 6 months or so- some
specific to Windows. I've met with pretty good success using Diamond and ATI's
products. Since it looks like you'll be using DOS for a while, I'd wait to see
what comes down the road in the way of the new "Plug 'N Play" hardware support
for Windows95. I'm sure most of the large vendors probably have something in
the works if not a prototype already.
Standardization of hardware can be costly so I'd recommend deciding on what
_OS_ you might want to standardize on and then think about the hardware.
Unfortunately, until the number of flavors of Windows drops back to sane
levels, different hardware will work best on the different OS's.

Thanks for the response. Some of the engineering groups were still using
Autocad 11/DOS unitl approx 6 months ago – now there talking about Autocad 13
on WinNT – this should be an interesting ride.
This is a good addition to the research thus far.

Feel like I'm writing to a martian, Who are you?
To the video adapter question, our company custom builds systems for the CAD /
Animation market and have used ATI, Diamond, Matrox and #9 adapters. Currenty,
we have moved to the EXCLUSIVE use of the #9 Imagine128 series of adapters. No
glitches in DOS, WFW, WINNT, or #DS. And, it is really fast…
