Help!
I'm making a Space ship which needs the detail of hull plates, the actual
plates that go together to make the hull, making them on the straight surfaces
was easy, now at the front of the ship the hull curves and bends, so
booleaning on all this score lines will be almost impossible,
The Ship is a Federation Runabout from 'Trek, so does anyone have any
idea about this lines on the hull, the problem with an inverted tex' map is
that there would have to be about 30-40 made across the hull!, is there
another method that the manuals or Inside 3ds have not mentioned?

Greg, Do you need a ton of detail in your ship? I assume so if you're trying to
boolean on geometry. If you can live with it, it's much easier to just stick
boxes, etc. in your hull and then attach them instead of booleaning them. You
can also subdivide some faces and then pull select vertices outward to get
lines. Scatter may also work for you, as it does place objects based on
normals. But if you need to be exacting about your lines – then either modeling
them in or making accurate maps is the way to go. You may also try selecting
groups of faces, detaching them to new objects and then mapping them seperately
may work. Of course reattaching and welding all the vertexes would have to be
done. It all comes down to how much detail you need.
Hope that helps some. Good luck.
