I think the word/concept missing from the ramble so far is "Craft."
Digitizing with Digi-View is a Craft, something that can be taught and
learned formally, even from a book. If I cut up a magazine and paste
pictures together in a collage, the result will be both bad Craft (I never
did learn how to glue without lumps) and bad Art (I have bad taste except
with regards to Visual Interfaces, where my taste is impeccable). If I
give the pictures to a commercial Artist to paste, the result will be good
Craft but Not Art even though it was done by an Artist. I believe it would
be possible to teach me to glue cleanly, so gluing down pictures is a
Craft. No book or formal syllabus could teach me to distinguish which
pictures are Too Melodramatic, which are Too Trite, etc. That's Art.
