Richard, I've been downloading DX7 voices from various networks and computers
and then converting them to Amiga (Dr T's) format. The problem usually is that
other computers save voices in a slightly different format. This data must be
stipped off for the voices to be usable. I've written a short C program that
strips data for various formats. I wonder if this subject would be suitable for
an article in Amazing Computing? Today i downloaded 71 banks of voices, for a
total of over 2000. Without conversion, they'd be useless. What i have in mind
is an article showing the general process of converting MIDI voice files, using
the Dx7 as a specific example. After reading the article, one could
make alterations to fit the particular format of any MIDI synthesizer. The
article would also include tables showing how to convert various DX7 formats
and a program to do the conversion for you. Do you think AC would be
interested? The specific techniques aren't hard, and could easily be
generalized for other applications. Let me know your opinion on whether to
proceed.

Phil, I think it's definitely an idea worth pursuing. If I could make a
suggestion, why don't you write up your article, then EasyPlex it to me. I'll
run it through my filters, then pass it on to the powers that be. As long as
you're willing to do the work on spec (with there being a chance that you won't
be printed), I'd say go for it!
When you write the article, be sure to generalize it as much as possible. In
other words, talk about the DX7 specifically, but use it as an EXAMPLE of how
to do it… make sure the reader is aware that a similar technique can be used
on any patch/synth/editor. If you can, outline the approach you used/they
would use to determine how to perform a similar operation for other
combinations.
