Over in the Technical SIG, a discussion about icons vs CLI has touched on the issue of whether programming is more like writing poetry or digging a ditch. I think a programmer is more like a ditchdigger than a poet. One can certainly dig ditches in a reflective manner, the Zen of the Shovel and all that; and the ditchdigger is less likely to miss a meal than the poet. Any thoughts?

Thol, It's kinda like like digging a ditch to make a poem. You're fleshing ideas out in a concrete manner, but the end product is _still_ the original idea- just a bit more tangible. Is a poet any less a poet if he sets his work down on paper? Doug
