Hi Everyone… Could someone tell me is there is a program that emulates UNIX
on the amiga 500. I have 1 meg of memory. If not, how about a VI editor on the
Amiga.

You can get a very reasonable vi-like editor with Manx Aztec c – Its name is
"z". The Manx environment looks very much like Unix, but it is not Unix. If
you can find a compatible source, you might try Minix, which is a public domain
Unix clone originally intended for the IBM pc. Failing that, you will probably
have to wait for C= to get their Unix Ami out; supposed to be this fall from
what I hear.

I think he's looking for a shell with support tools that make the Amiga feel
like UNIX, not a true UNIX environment. I know there are at least 2 UNIX shell
environments available for the Amiga, although I don't remember what their
names are.
The best Shell for the Amiga, which happens to be highly similar to the Unix
one, is CShell (also known as CSH). You can find version 3.2 in DL 9. BTW, it's
created by two young italian boys from Pisa — where the tower is! Mario.
Thanks Larry, I'll look into Minix for now. (I guess it's in the libraries
somewhere.) I'll take note of C=. Do you know if Unix Ami will be shareware or
commercial?

The Amiga with UNIX will definitely be commercial! Commodore will be releasing
(sometime soon, maybe better than RSN) A 2500 based Amiga with the Unix
operating system. It requires an 80M hard disk and a tape backup, plus an '020
card, I believe.

Ho ho. Guess I'll have to wait 'till I win the lottery! I'll just be content

I work on a UNIX environment on a daily basis (Sun 386i), so I've become fond
of vi myself (please – no religious wars about vi vs. emacs). I use a PD
editor called Stevie, which is available on one of the Fish disks (#217 has the
latest). It only has a subset of the entire vi vocabulary (one significant
omission being "R"), but all in all, I'm very happy with it. There may be a
copy uploaded here on Compuserve; check it out.
As for UNIX emulation, I don't have any definite news. One thing you may want
to look into is ARP 1.3. AShell (replacement for AmigaShell) provides
UNIX-like shell facility (e.g. wildcards).

As you say, Stevie looks to be just what I'm looking for. I'll check it out
in the libraries along with Minix.

Rejean, there is no UNIX emulator. One of those would take far more power than
the native A500 can muster. It requires a large hard disk and lots of memory
for instance. Not impossible, but quite hard to put on a 500. There WILL be
an Amiga that runs UNIX in a few months, but it will be based on the 2500
rather than the 500.
Now, for VI, there are several clones of that. STEVIE seems to be the most
popular one. I'm sorry, but I'm not a Unix person, really, and I haven't kept
up with where in the libraries that would be, and a look at my list didn't
locate it. Perhaps someone else knows (I hope).

STEVIE seems to be winning the war. I'll still check for STEVIE and Minix
and see what comes up.

No UNIX on the Amiga 500, but there are three editors that might come close to
what you want for VI. One is "Z", it comes with Aztec C. It's close to VI,
but doesn't support some of the "ex" type editting commands.
Another editor is STEVIE, and the third is UEDIT which is user configurable,
and has VI type command macros for it. Both of those should be available in
our libraries. However, I've never used either of them…..I use "Z" instead.

I knew about your brother STEVIE, <grin> but not about UEDIT. Thats another
one to look into. I think any of these will help me practice at home to learn
VI.
