I have an IBM with telecomm software, and I have recently downloaded newuser.msb, and entered the AmigaBasic program. I hooked my modem to my A500 and ran it. I can't get the modem to dial, unless I do it manual, but my problems do not end there! All I see next is the input statement on my screen: Down load this file into my computer. I am extremely new to AmigaBasic. Can anyone tell me how I can get into CompuServe with my MoDem? Thank You, David

David, My memory is that you have to give it a few dummy filenames along the way, every time you enter a "!" (no quotes) the system will ask you for a filename. I believe it also does it before you can dial the modem from the keyboard. Just start up the program, when it asks for the filename, then simply tell it "dummy" or better yet, "ram:dummy" and then you should be able to dial the modem from the amigabasic prompt. Follow the instructions exactly as they are written in the file. Don

David: I am not certain I can help, but I will try. As another option, you might want to consider: (1) contacting a local user group and asking for a copy of a public domain telecomm program or (2) sometimes one of the disk based magazines (such as AmigoTimes, or Amiga Resource) have a telecomm program on their disk,(3) If your IBM has a 3 1/2" disk drive you might want to try downloading a simple Amiga term program; I think the Amiga 1.3 extras disk has a program to transfer an IBM disk file to the Amiga. I assume that your modem works perfectly well on your IBM, and that it autodials just fine. I assume that you have the modem hooked up to the Amiga without problem. Your message was vague about what happens after you dial CIS manually. I do not understand whether you can connect with CIS acceptably and read messages, but you cannot get a download protocol to work, or whether you cannot get the NEWUSER.MSB program to "talk" to you modem at all, cannot connect with CIS at all, and the input statement just pops up immediately after you manually dial the modem. I'm pretty sure the cure would be different depending upon which problem you are having. I would note that the AmigaBasic disk has a small Term program on it. That program will not allow you to capture files or download, but I did use it once to connect to CIS. It should allow you to confirm that your modem is working with your Amiga, and that you can get into CIS with your current Preferences settings. You might want to give it a try as a diagnostic tool. Since others have used the NEWUSER.MSB program to bootstrap themselves into a better term program, it will work. Probably, you either made an error in typing, or have something set wrong. Leave a reply and we'll help.
