I understand there is a public domain program which allows one to convert
IBM Deluxe Paint II file into Amiga IFF files for use in Deluxe Paint III
(Amiga) animations. If this is true is it on this board and what is the
name? I teach animation at a college with a zillion IBM PC-2 machines and
one Amiga 2000 (mine). I want my students to create animation frames on
the IBM (with VGA graphics) for my Amiga. Is this possible. I will, of
course, use DOS 2 DOS to convert the physical files if necessary. Can
anyone advise here?
I'm not aware of anything which will convert directly from Deluxe Paint on
the IBM to IFF on the Amiga. (Technically, they're virtually the same
format, but the IBM DPII files use 8 bit planes, which aren't normal for
IFF…) On the other hand, it is quite possible to convert such images to
GIF on the IBM side (using LBM2GIF, available in the PICS forum), and then
using one of several methods to convert from GIF to IFF on the Amiga side.
(Methods include: Use HAMGIF or VirtGIF to display the GIF, then screen
capture; Use GIF2IP to convert to DigiView IP format, then use DigiView to
convert to IFF. All these programs, except DigiView, are here in LIB 9 or
LIB 1)
I reviewed Deluxe Paint PC for Compute magazine, and I wondered about this,
too. It turns out that the Prism / Diamond paint program from Impulse will
correctly load and translate a VGA IFF file to Amiga HAM. It correctly
interprets the 256 color CMAP hunk. Deluxe Paint Amiga would choke on it. I
haven't tested DigiPaint III. I know I told them they should add this, but I
don't know if they did. So yes, your students could create IFF images on the
PC and load them on the Amiga. Deluxe Paint Amiga will load Deluxe Paint PC
images. Beware of the differences in aspect ratio. They may be limited to
certain PC screen resolutions that match the Amiga screen resolutions.
