I have a friend who has an Amiga at home and wishes to transfer work to the
IBM PC's at work and bring work home. Is there a way to have the Amiga
write in DOS format? – Kent

If one of the PC's at work has a 3 1/2" floppy (and if you don't they
are inexpensive and simple to add), the easiest thing to do is to buy
Cross-Dos. It retails for about $40, and will let you format, read and
write PC format 720K floppies in your Amiga drives, without losing the
capability of using Amiga format disks in there too! It is much more than a
copy utility though. You can WORK with the data in the PC format. So your
Amiga terminal program can download to a PC format disk, or you can edit a
PC ASCII or WordPerfect file directly.

May I suggest three ways, and you choose:
Buy DOS-2-DOS, Central Coast software, about $35-40 mail order.
Buy CROSSDOS, Consultron, about $20 mailorder (this is my personal
favorite)
Download MSDOS.LZH from Library 14.
The latter two set up the Amiga drives so that they have a driver and
mountlist for the MS-DOS driver that comes with them, and a different name
is used for this from the regular AmigaDOS name. The author suggested
calling them DI0: and DI1:, but I chose to call mine MF0: and MF1: and they
work just fine that way. When you call for MF0:, it reads and writes in
MS-DOS format; when you call for DF0: on the same drive, it responds to
AMigaDOS. Very slick and handy.

Betty – Without violating CIS non commercial policy any suggestions on
where one could buy CROSSDOS?
Not being AMIGA literate, if I capture MSDOS.LZH: o Is it ASCII? o Can I
port it via a RS-232 cable and null modem to his AMIGA? (AMIGA settings?) o
Does he merge it to create a BASIC loader? o Etc.
My friend is not too knowledgeable about his AMIGA so a 'receipe' is
required. (The quick response to this question is encouraging him to sign
up to CIS as soon as he can afford a Modem.) – Kent
CrossDos is available from software dealers. Three times a year, Amazing
Computing puts out a "Guide to Amiga Hardware and Software," and CrossDos
is in there (as well as thousands of other products.

I dl'd MessyDos, but I've been having trouble getting it to work. I
modified my MountList according to the sample provided, and made sure the
MessyFileSystem and MessyDisk.device were abvailable, but I can't mount a
Messy Device. I'm trying to use my internal 3.5" drive, so I assigned it as
unit 0 in the mount list. Is this correct? I've never tried it before.
When I type Mount ms0: the hard drive kicks in for a bit (df0: does
nothing), and the prompt returns. If I try to mount it a second time, it
says "MS0: already mounted." But if I "cd ms0:" (or anything else with
ms0:) it says "insufficient free store." I have 3Mb.
Am I missing something? -SJK
