#RSX 11 help
8 messages in this thread
Hello and
Help!
In my regular job i work as a 2 way radio tech. However due to my computer
hobby and such as the world of computers has now integrated with 2 way
radio systems i get to be system admin of ever more computer systems.
My lateest is a pdp-11/73 as the central brains of an instrument control
system.
I like it much better than a Vme unix system.
However i need some help.
Since the 11 comes as part of a single application system RSX comes as
part of the software under a liscence.
Alas the manuals for RSX are not included.
Where can I learn the DCL for myself and not go broke buying expensive
docs?.
I wish to learn the system so when they wake me up in the middle of the
night i can call in and see whats going on.
If anyone can tell me right off the command to look at the files on disk
it would help.
I am the system admin.
Thanks
joe
The command to look at files on the disk is, simply, DIR. Directories are
referenced in brackets, e.g. DIR [MUMBLE] gives you a list of the files in
the directory called [MUMBLE]. RSX supports only a single-level directory
structure.
There are several variants of RSX around; the three most common these days
are RSX-11M, RSX-11M-Plus, and MicroRSX (which is a prebuilt
very-close-cousin to M-Plus). Which does your system have?
If your system has the full RSX distribution installed on it, you can use
the HELP command at the DCL prompt to learn about most of the common
commands (like DIR etc.) in enough detail to get by.
The MicroRSX documentation is not all that expensive and provides a pretty
good overview. Unfortunately I can't find the order number off hand.

I have the micro rsx system.
Thanks for the tip i will try it out.
I have a lot to learn about the system and a very short time to do it.
After all i cannot drop the system off line after its in its new home.

What version of RSX are running also some things cannot be done in DCL you
need to use MCR. The new the RSX the closer the DCL is to a VAX. A good
book is VAX DCL. The RSX Files-11 structure is different
but basic commands are the same. Unless its been removed try signing and
then type "HELP". MCR and DCL are like night and day. I assume that by
the statement "looking at the files" you need a directory listing. This
should work. INS $PIP or ins [1,54]pip. You should get another prompt or
a task name already assigned message. Try the following PIP [*,*]*.* or
DIR [*,*]*.* one of those should work.
Thanks for the help. I will try those out and see what happens.

Here's another hint. The guys that wrote CP/M came from DEC and originally
wrote RSX!!!! Get an old CP/M manual. PIP is the real command there. DIR
is a shell that calls PIP. All of the CP/M standards work (wild cards,
etc) You will need to learn the UIC structure, however.
DEC has a short manual for about $45 dollars. It's really a field tech's
quick reference manual for the OpSys and is available through Dec Direct.
Call your local DEC office.
Joe,
make that PIP [*,*]*.*/LI.
