Tony, > once someone figures out how to network O/S-2 machines. The lab that I work for is USING a version of the OS/2 networking product: it's called OS/2 LAN Manager, and it SUCKS BIG TIME! OS/2 LAN Manager, currently version 1.2 (we're running 1.1), is: 1) A memory hog. Even if Microsoft did reduce the size of the code by 50%, it would still require a minimum of 6MB of RAM on our Intel 80386-based dedicated network server to run our network configuration (we're currently running, just barely, with 12MB of RAM on our primary server). 2) Slow as a snail. We upgraded from a NetBIOS-based PC Network for MS-DOS workstations, and have seen REDUCTIONS IN THE SPEED OF OPERATION of the entire network since we upgraded (you think WordPerfect on a stock Amiga is slow, try PRINTING from WordPerfect to the OS/2 LAN Manager print spooler and then wait for the job to come out of the printer). 3) Buggy. People who do not use AmigaDOS still think it's buggy. However, my Amiga running AmigaDOS 1.3.x has been running without crashing for about a year now — the OS/2 LAN Manager running on our network has crashed an average of 5 times per week over the last 6 weeks, and is supposedly a "stable release". 4) People say that OS/2 has virtual memory. However, we have had to DISABLE VIRTUAL MEMORY to run the network services that we need… 5) If you had to use OS/2 LAN Manager to administer to a LAN, you'd probably wish that you were running AmigaDOS — I do every day. If you haven't figured it out yet, I think it would be a waste of time for Commodore to try to port OS/2 to the Amiga… 🙂 Wayde
