do you have to power down when changing modes? or do you have some kind
of switch, I have been warned that with some types of swithches the
monitor can for an instant get current from both cards/sources and be
overloaded, can you tell me if this is true.

No, you don't have to power down to change modes. When running under OS/2
I switch modes all the time, no problems.
I use an A/B switch to go between the Amiga and the PC, the switch is a
"break before make" type and therefore is not a problem.
