We make a video editing system for use in post production studios. We
write software to access off-the-shelf hardware that lets you digitize
CD-quality audio and 8 bit video (30 fps) to hard disk in realtime. You
then edit the clips any way you want, and view it at any time. You can
then create the final footage in a couple of ways: You can have the Mac
control 2 VTR's and do an auto-assembly (the final footage comes from your
original tapes) or you can output the necessary info about the edit order
to floppy and take it to any video hardware machine for more editing.
We sell the complete system (Mac IIx, 2 19" monitors, hardware, software,
etc) for between $45,000 and $100,000. This is everything except the
VTR's.
It's a big seller in the commercial and post-production houses and is
really amazing (very slick).
Are you involved with video in any way?

Well, I just dabble in it. The Amiga is an excellent tool for
graphics, and at such a reasonable price.

Yes, I have had an Amiga since 1985 and I still prefer it for most things –
The Amiga could really use a 24-bit color board and higher resolution, but
I see great things in store…

Steve,
Hopefully Impulse's Firecracker board will go a long way towards
fulfilling the 24-bit color board and higher res. wishes of a lot of us!

Any idea when it's supposed to be out and what it can do? And, of course,
how much $$?

Steve,
Unfortunately, I don't have too much information about the Firecracker.
I had a "review" (maybe Preview would be better) from the most recent issue
of Amazing Computing – but I left that at work. Anyway, with 1 meg on board
it is supposed to give 512 X 4xx resolution with 24 bit planes (16 million
colors), and with 2 meg on the card it is supposed to have 1024 x 4xx
resolution with the same bit planes (I don't remember the exact number in
the one instance – hence the 4xx – it is fourhundred and something).
Impulse has a representative in AmigaVendor, I believe. Maybe he could
answer these questions.
And then again, I've heard rumors that someone else is also working on a
24 bit plane board for the Amiga. I don't remember who though. Someone
other than NewTek (the Video Toaster is supposed to be 24 bit too).

There's the University of Lowell board that uses a TI34010, I think. It was
both in the UofL booth and the CBM booth at SIGGRAPH. The Firecracker was
also at the CBM booth at SIGGRAPH, but for some reason, I preferred the
UofL board. –Eet–

Jim,
I think the other board that I've heard rumors about is from someone
else. I don't remember where I read the rumor now, however.
RE the University of Lowell board – I don't remember the specs for it's
resolution/colors. Besides, the board has to actually come OUT before we
can buy/use it. And the UofL board has had almost as long a gestation
period as the Toaster! And the Firecracker will have some software behind
it from the start – not that the UofL card wouldn't – IF it ever makes it
to market!

NOTHING has the gestation period of the toaster! (……..and to think it
only took 7 days to create the world…..)
