#Removable Hard Drives?

I am going to be expanding my Amiga 2000 (w/Toast) to use Sunrize Industries AD
516 8 track audio recorder. I want to use it with a removable hard drive.
Does anyone know: what drives will work with this system?, what is the price
range based on hard drive size?, are there any reasons to use a 'regular' hard
drives instead? the airspeed volocity of an african swallow?

I am using a Syquest 88meg with my A2000. It works fine. It seems to work at
about the same speed as my internal HD. I suspect that speed is more a factor
of the controller (2091 in my case) than anything else. As to the speed of the
african swallow it must be pretty fast cuz I've never been able to see one.

You might consider taking a look at the newest SyQuest removable drive.
It's a 270MB 3.5" model. Cartridges are around $100 and a drive in a case
costs around $650 with one cart.It can read/write the 105MB carts too and
has an access time of 13.5ms.

As far as removable hard drives are concerned, you really have a choice
between the Syquest and the Bernoulli. The Syquest is available with a
105MB cartridge (though I understand a larger one is in the offing) and
the Bernoulli with a 150MB cartridge. They are both about the same price
– $500 U.S. for an internal drive and $600 U.S. for an external drive.
Note that both of these drives are SCSI so you will need a SCSI card for
your 2000.
The main differences between a 'regular' hard drive and a removable one –
besides unlimited storage and portability of the media for the removable
drive – is speed and price. Removables are slightly slower than regular
hard drives, though the difference sometimes is not even noticable. A
regular drive would be cheaper than a removable for, say 150MB of storage,
but as you use more and more storage the removable becomes cheaper than
buying more regular hard drives (and less hassle).
I have a Bernoulli Transportable 150MB on my 3000 and it works great. I
know of many Syquest owners on this forum who are also happy with thier
drives.
As far as the Sunrize card is concerned, there is a review of the
Bernoulli Box in the August/September issue of Video Toaster User (p. 95)
that mentions recording to the Bernoulli Box with no problems. That test
was using a 68040 accelerator based machine.
I am not familiar with the airspeed velocity of an african swallow. A
european swallow, however…
