#A1200 Hard drive

Being H&G from any Commodore dealers, how can I go about getting hold of the
Commodore HD Setup kit for the A1200? (Or even better, what files in the
libraries will work to set up the drive? I've looked but can't seem to find
what I'm looking for…)

Tenex sells the CBM hard drive kit for the 1200 for $34.99 which
Includes:
install disk
fonts disk
cable assembly
mounting screws for a 2.5" hard drive
Amiga hard disk manual
AmigaDOS manual
AREXX manual
instructions
If you don't need all the 'stuff' in the kit
they sell the hard drive install disk by itself for $2.00
and the IDE cable for $8.99
Great! It seems however that my upgrade is on hold. Hard to beleive that
Cdore has cash flow problems when NO ONE seems to have any A1200's or
4000/030's in stock.
Does anyone know of any truth to the rumor that the 4000/030 is no longer
available? Half of the vendor's I've talked too say it has been discontnued,
the other half so it hasn't… I would think the way they had been selling in
the post-christmas season, Cdore would have kept them around, although maybe it
drew too much off of 4000/040 sales…
The Amiga 4000/030 is discontinued.
In fact, the recent batch of A4000/040 systems were made from the remains
of the 030 systems. It is funny though, right after that happened the
demand for 030 systems increased significantly. 🙂

It seems as though, due to prices and the ability to upgrade to a full- blown
4000, that more people would have bought 030's… I know I would have…. then
again, maybe that is why CDore cancelled them.
Remember the good old days, when an Amiga would not only run circles around the
top-of-the-line "IBM Compats" and it cost a LOT less? If I weren't so d*mn
loyal I'd probably own a DX2-66 by now!
Well, just hold on a few more months- CBM will have the new, improved,
CHEAPER A4000 on sale. There will be no need for a 030 version then.

Not really, I was talking about the cost-reduced version of the 4000 due
out in a few months.

I'll keep an eye out for it… but I doubt my patience will last!

Commodore may have gone through with what it said it might do at the
Pasadena show, that is, drop the 4000/030 from the US. It didn't
sell well here with the 040 just a few hundred $$ more and it drew
off $$ from more profitable 4000/040 sales. 1200s are absolutely NOT
to be found anywhere in the USA right now. May not be available to
dealers/distributors for a few weeks. apparently (not official, just
inference) the CD32 is SO successful it has (necessarily, given the
cash situation at CBM) completely overtaken most business planning
considerations for the very short run. rumor has it a new factory for
Amigas is opening which should take the pressure off the main
production facility. Perhaps we're only witnessing the 1200 shortage
temporarily while the new plant gets the pipeline full and cranks 'em
out for shipment to the USA. Why not get a 4000/040, anyway? I sold
one A4000/030 when it first appeared early last summer, but it came
with only 4mb ram (2chip, 2fast – but the fast were 2 1-mb simms!
which must be removed! to replace them with 4mb ones if you want all
18mb ram – can't mix the simms). Also it came with no math chip (but
a socket for a PLCC 68882). I thought then that the 040 version was
a better deal. Much faster, no need for extra $$ for a math chip,
and no need to dispense with valuable ram simms just to fill up the
machine to capacity at a later date.
Cash, and the wife are the two major reasons against getting one. It
was an act of God practically to get her to agree on a 1200… (And
if Quicken won't run under PC-Task I'm had!) I would love nothing
more than to get one however… (I always seem to be one step behind
the power curve on these things!)
Anyway… I'm hoping and praying that CD32 gets the support it
deserves both from CDore and 3rd party vendors…. Hopefully it will
be enough, the question is, does Commodore pull out if they post a
successful entry to the home entertainment field.
Speaking of shortages… Tri-State SUPPOSEDLY has the A1200 in, and
mine should be arriving with in 4-5 business days. (He promised!
<g>) Now, finding a 2.5 hard drive at a reasonable price is like
pulling teeth. MidWest Micro Seagate 127's for 215…. but Seagate
has suspended shipments to attempt to drive up the price of notebook
HD's. (at least that's what one source tells me, or did the Hard
drive platter factory next to the microchip plant burn down as well?)
I don't think I'll survive another day without a HD…. I've done it
for too long, and am finally beginning to feel it!

I'll check with TriState. Thanks. $215 for the 127mb drive sounds quite
reasonable. If you'd like me to find one for you instead, Email me. I
frequently can get very good buys on various drives from my network of
suppliers. Timing is everything.

All the major mail order houses have the 1200 HD kit. Tenex, Safe
Harbor…
RDPrep in the microbotics section of AmigaVendor probably would do the
trick, but I'd suggest getting the kit anyway. (More documentation.)
