#PenPal ASCII import

Woody,
I was just attempting to import an ascii file into PenPal. It is
causing me nothing but trouble. The file was originally a Scribble!
document. I printed it to a file and used QED to delete all the control
sequences and such. When I opened the file as ascii everything seemed ok
so I saved the document. As soon as I performed any kind of operation on
the new document PenPal started to do wierd things:
i) If I used the backspace key to delete a character, a character 6-7
characters to the right gets deleted. The delete key works fine.
ii) The bottom footer gets locked at 3 3/8 inches. I am unable to alter
it in any way.
iii) When I close the document I get the requester asking if I want to
save changes. The name of the document has "DH0:" appended to the document
name after the ".WTR". The full name is
"DH0:Productivity/Documents/Documents/Margaret/RESUME_JULY_91.WTRDH0:"
Hope you can figure out the problem. I'll upload the file so you can look
at it.

I am not familiar with QED but it sounds as though you still have control
or maybe even "alt characters" in the document. Unfortunately, many
editors do not show control characters.

QED displays the control characters, so I removed them, and it didn't work.
I even tried printing the file to disk and even after editing this version
I couldn't get it load properly.
Again, even if an editor displays control charaters, it might not display
all ctrl characters. Also, some "extended ASCII" characters may cause
problems and not be see in the editor. Lastly (for my limited thinking),
you may be having problems caused by the line terminator(s). Don't know
what the Word processor wants but it could be choking because it is
expecting CRs only (or something similar).

You are right that QED may not display all control characters. I checked
the print file I created with a hex editor and I can't find any characters
that QED did not display.
I would have thought it was the control characters for sure if this same
problem hadn't happened to me before with a document that I exclusively
used PenPal on.
If I could have just found the stupid Scribble manual and figured out how
to print a simple ASCII file out I would have been OK. Anyway I ended up
loading the whole mess into PageStream without any problems.
