at this point, my best suggestion is to try the IBM Hardware forum.
They'll probably recommend running one of the utilities they have to find
out what's where and then give suggestions. It's beyond me. Sorry.

I probably need to get a full upper memory map from Marion or find her
back issue of CROSSINGS where she published it. I tried forcing
EMM386.SYS to use A000 or E000. The BB would either freeze or put out
messages in slow motion.
The thought had also occurred to me that I should try one of the forums
such as NDSG (the old DRDOS forum) or the IBM Hardware forum or use IBMFF
to find one of those utilities for discovering the layout of upper memory.
Also, I might get an answer in one of the ZiffNet forums.

solving problems is what I like to do (before it was for pay, now it's
for fun). I'm still pondering this one. I still think you should try the
IBMHW forum.

Brian,
I probably will try it after I get over the learning curve with
Microsoft FORTRAN 5.1. Using the command line compiler FL is easier for
me than using the PWB (Programmers WorkBench, a Grapical Users Interface
[GUI])! I need to learn it before this Monday to get my homework done.
Fortunately, the system will work w/o having the memory tweaked for
maximum performance. Getting the Amiga setup was child's play in
comparison.
Less than a decade ago, I used to do Z80 assembly language
programming.

Gayle… It was June 1993 (I was putting together the 1993 index
last night!). It says 386 but that's a typo (mea culpa)–it's really
286, but I think they're the same. Have you tried changing PCprefs
to A000 as a temporary measure to check this out? You'll lose the
Janus services, but if it works it might tell you something about

No, I didn't try that option since I almost need the virtual Janus
drives to have enough room to use some of these monster applications. The
real harddrives for my 386 bridgeboard (BB) are the two 20Meg drives on my
hardcard. SStor from Addstor has already been used on my D: drive just to
hold WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS and Microsoft FORTRAN 5.1. There isn't
really any more room if I also want work space.
Another reason for learning the way upper memory is used or abused
is that the SSDIR command with SSTOR will crash the system. The
SSTOR and SSTUTIL utilities seem to work fine so SSDIR malfunction is
not really a loss, just annoying (I simply don't use it!) since the
main utilities give me the same information and more. I guess SSDIR
indiscriminately uses upper memory buffers and trashes some Janus
interface areas that I need to have the memory manager (if I could
get it loaded and working) mark as off-limits.
If you wish to say something about data compression in your newsletter
sometime, feel free to use my comments on which I'll be happy to elaborate
if needed.
