#Chinon CD ROM Drive??
5 messages in this thread
I have a Chinon SCSI CD ROM drive that has been in an MS-DOS machine. Is
there anyway I can use it with my Supra HD Controller on my A1000???
Thanks,

Tim, you might be able to use your Chinon CD Rom drive. There is a company
that sells driver software, I believe called Hypermedia Concepts, for
various CD drives and SCSI controllers. But I'm not sure if the Chinon
drive or Supra controllers are supported. Seems to me that it is very
limited on the controllers it supports. Xetec uses a Chinon CDS-431 CD Rom
drive, and their software does support the Supra "Wordsync" controller, but
you might have a tough time purchasing the software seperately. I would
give them a call anyway and see if you can purchase the software.

Actually, Xetec is quite happy to sell their software separately. I bought
a used Chinon CD-ROM drive from a IBM user for dirt cheap, and knowing that
Xetec uses the Chinon drive, I called them and asked to buy their driver
software separately.
I must add that Xetec's installation software (CD Install 1.7), is easy to
use and very well done. In fact, their drivers work with my controller
(ICD AdSCSI 2000) even though it isn't listed in their installation menu!
And unless something's changed very recently, I believe Hypermedia's
drivers work only with Commodore's (A590/2091/3000) and GVP's controllers.
Glad to hear that Xetec is selling the CD Rom software separately. I bought
the whole package (with drive) a couple of months ago and quite pleased
with it so far. It would be nice if their software supported other CD Rom
drives other than the Chinon because there are much faster drives out on
the market now. Hmmm…CD Install 1.7? I've got 1.5 and I called the BBS
last week. Guess I had better make another phone call 8^)

sells CDROM-FS, an Amiga file system extension for CD-ROM drives. It
enables you to mount and read Hi Sierra Group and ISO 9660 CDROM's. They
list several Chinon drives as being supported, however they do not list the
Supra controllers. That does not mean Supra controllers do not work, just
that they have not tested them. You could call them for more info.
