#Craters
6 messages in this thread
Hey, I downloaded this craters thing, thinking it would make a neat
addition to my Chaos program, but it doesn't appear to have a user
interface. Do I need a C compiler to do anything but watch this?
Hi, Ellison.
If I recall my history correctly, craters was a little pet project that was
hoped to be shipped with Chaos, but was left out for some reason. I've
played with it a little and gotten some pretty neat stuff from it. It is
unfortunate that there is not a nicer front end. I don't have much more
information than that.
PhilD, do you have any further data about Craters?

"Craters" is indeed a lot of fun. I'm not really sure why we didn't include
it in CHAOS either — there wasn't really a technical reason, just a kinda
arbitrary decision. Possibly it just wasn't sufficiently tweakable. The odd
part is: Craters was the first piece of what became CHAOS that I put a
front end on; I wish I still had a copy of the front-end version around.
OK. Thanks. I understand that Craters didn't make the cut. But it
doesn't seem to DO anything. It just runs like an animation. I gather (I
think) from your messages that there is some way to make it DO something,
like the other parts of Chaos – you know, tweak it to change the screen
output – I don't know, bigger craters, smaller craters, less craters,
something. All it seems to do is fill up with craters. No buttons I push
seem to do anything. Any there is no cursor, so my mouse is of no use.
Did I miss something?
Ellison, I have never seen a version of craters that "does" anything. It
really, truly does just sit there and play like an animation. The beauty
of it lies in the techniques behine what it's doing, more so than in what
it is doing.
OK. Thanks. I just wasn't sure I was using it right.
