Just got my new V.32bis, love it, hate my phone company. I'd be rich if I
could sell the static! I guess it's static that hangs up the modem with no
notice, just "click". In my 5 years of owning a Supra2400 modem I have
NEVER been able to stay on line for long. I hoped the new modem would help,
but no, I get cut off just the same. It happened in NYC, in a modern
building with new wiring and now in the boonies with the Micky Mouse Phone
Co. Everyone in this forum insists it's static so I have to believe them.
I love the fax facility, but would like to know who gives tech support,
Australia is very expensive long distance <:^}>. Nothing serious, just not
clear on how one makes a cover page in Ppage, since GPFax only uses IFF or
ASCII. I made one and printed it in GPFax, which I sent as a first page but
I see no way to made an automatic one, with all the fax info (how many
pages, attention etc.) on it. Do they mean for you to make a new one with
that info for each fax?

You basically don't. The cover page is a predefined thing. You can
include two IFF pictures and a signature IFF. All of this is explained on
pages 39 and 40 of the GPFax manual.

My boss just got one of your 14.4 Fax/Modems, and I was able to use the fax
just fine, but was unable to connect to your BBS at 9600 BAUD.
I have been able to connect at 9600 BAUD with some local BBS, and have had
no problems. Unfortunately, when trying to link up to my Amiga 3000 we get
'no joy'.
We get the message CONNECT 9600, but nothing else. When I type characters,
my boss gets garbage, and when he types I see nothing.
I think the problem may be related to my US Robotics WorldPort 9600 BAUD
V.32 MNP5 modem. While I have not had ANY problems using it for the last 2
months on both my Amiga AND my AMAX emulator (both through the Amiga Serial
port), I would not be surprised if BOTH modems had to be set to some
standard state.
Unfortunately, the docs for the Supra modem are 70 miles away at my boss'
house (he's a video producer, not a hacker like me), and my modem was a
hand-me-down that came without documentation (though it has worked
flawlessly thus far).
Any help would be appreciated

First make sure you are using a hardware handshaking cable between the
supra and the compuer and have it turned on in your software. Next you
should probably be using the AT&F2 modem init string.

Thanks for the reply. Mike (Mark?) from tech support actually returned my
call of 2 days ago. We spent about 1/2 hour trying to connect without
success. Neither of us tried AT&F22 though I did try AT&F w/o success.
I will try the AT&F2 and see if it fixes it.

This is a follow-up to my previous plea for help.
We have gotten the same results using 3 different comm programs. He has
tried ATALKIII (Yecch!), Baud Bandit, and even an old version of JRComm.
The results have been the same every time.

Is there a way to check to see if the upgrade rom for my V32bis has been
shipped. I know the reg. is there as I can check it from your BBS. Maybe
add a note to that message when it is shipped or expected to ship. Anyway,
another question. How do I make the modem report to the computer what the
connect rate (modem to modem) is when someone calls me????

We haven't sent anybody ROM yet. The date has been slipped to the middle
of this month.
As for the connect message, I suggest you look at register s95, that is the
one that controls you connect messages.

If you have problems with different modems, on different phone
lines, but using the same computer. Then I'd be quite suspicious of my
computer, not the phone lines.

Also two different computers. 1000 and 3000 in NY and 3000 in NC. But I'm
beating a dead horse. I get cut off, no one seems to know the answer, so
I'll keep plugging along. At least the 9600 is faster and I can get more
done before the fatal "click".

Different modems, different computers, different phone lines…
Same software by any chance?

Same brand and model of modem…just two physically different
modems? What you're reporting is *supposedly* a known bug in the early
runs of the Rockwell v32.bis modem chip set. At least it's been reported
in at least one trade publication. My modem is based on the AT&T chip set,
so I have no personal experience with the Rockwell to cite.

Same software (On Line Platinum) and now Whap! The first modem was a Supra
2400 that I bought at the first Amiga Show ever, that my users group, NYC
Amuse sponsored. I think that was spring '86 or '87. I went nuts in NY
trying to get it to work, between being new to the whole thing and it
clicking off. I was so dumb I didn't realize the modem had hung up, I
thought CI$ had done something strange and keep calling them. I never
learned how to sign off because I never got a chance to <:^}>. I'm still
not a wiz kid on the wires but I am a little smarter and I do pretty fax on
my new Supra V.32bis ("and you'll keep doing it till you get it right"…an
inside opera joke I think of every time I see "bis")

Is it possible that you've got call waiting on your phone? And is
it possible that you're not disabling it before you attempt a call to CIS?
If you've got call waiting, and someone attempts to call you while
you're online with your modem…it will cause your modem to hang up.
If that's your problem, it can be cured by prefixing the number
you're dialing with a sequence ('*7 I believe) to disable call waiting for
that specific call. Check with your phone company to make sure that
sequence is correct.

If you knew how incredibly rude I think "call waiting" is you'd never ask
such a question <:^}>. Anyone who really has an emergency can have the
operator break in. No, I don't have call waiting or any thing else except a
plain black phone to make and recieve calls.
The modem gods have actually been nice for the last few days, but the
BackTalk elf has decided that my macros (my ID, password etc) end with
"control u". CI$ doesn't like that, crys "foul", and cuts me off as an
unauthorized call. Just when I thought I was all grown up and didn't need
Whap! to log on <g>. Can't wait to try a BBS.

Gracia, Use a Control M for the backtalk macros. That is a carriage return.

Well…I agree with you about call waiting…I don't like it. But
since I didn't know your opinion on that subject…it was a possibility.
Obviously not your problem then.
On the backtalk macros…get rid of the ^U and replace it with a ^M
and all should be well.

Thanks. Gee, I seem to be the only person who doesn't know how to make BT
macros work. I did figure out to put one in to keep it from always asking
for it when I boot it up. I guess I shouldn't complain for free and it does
work with Whap! Modem gods still behaving. I spell checked my message and
then forgot to correct my della dyslexia spelling. I do know better <g>.
