#PCX Loader
15 messages in this thread
HIya…
I've put a new PI module in DL6 for those of you playing with MS-DOS
software, it's a PCX loader for 2-256 color images. This is also in the new
PIE.lzh file, if you'd rather get the whole thing.
Look for PCX.lzh
This is three files; loadpcx, loadpcx.rexx and list.insert. These go to
CMPI:, RXPI:, and inserted into the list.list file in CMPI: respectivly.

Thanks for the PCX loader. That was one of the last reasons I still use
Adpro.

Any other file formats (besides TIFF, which we're working on) that you
particularly need?

Ben, all the loaders I need are now in IM, thanks. And TIFF will be most
welcome. Just can't wait until that 256 color IFF render option becomes
useable on the Amiga. 🙂

How about PICT and MacPaint?

For PICT, you probably want to talk to John Foust, he's got a working PICT
loader; he's not decided what to do with it, and I don't want to step on
his toes at this point, since he's done the work. He's on vacation (just
got married) so wait about a week before messaging him.
MacPaint is a possibility; anyone else interested? Anyone have a spec?

Thanks Ben…. will do.

Sure Ben, I wouldn't mind having a MacPaint loader/saver. Actually as I see
it, the more you have for IM/IP, the better. A book that I purchased awhile
back has a lot of good information on PC & Mac image formats. Its called
"Bit-Mapped Graphics" and was written by Steve Rimmer (ISBN 0-8306-3558-0).
He includes information and sample C code for such formats as MacPaint,
GIF, TIFF, GEM/IMG (for Ventura Publisher), and PCX. He was suppose to have
a second edition of the book out this summer that deals with a bunch of the
other formats. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to sit down and write
any code for a IM loader, but maybe I can do something before the end of
the summer. By then, you will probably have most of the popular and obscure
formats already available 8^)

John,
Steve Rimmer is one of my authors at my new magazine. In fact, he was a
founding editor of it. Our review copy of his new book came in about a week
ago and you should be seeing it in stores soon.
I should have a look at it to see what's inside. His Graphics Workshop
program is one of the most popular shareware programs. It does a LOT of
conversions, including Amiga IFF. But I don't think Steve's kept up WRT
IFF. I converted a interlaced WB screen to a PC format and wound up with
colour streaks in it. Had to use IFF2PCX. FWIW.

Malcolm: I'm curious as to what magazine you publish? Steve did a good job
with his first book and I'll be keeping my eye open for his new book. I
would still rather have 1 graphic's file format than the dozens or so that
are out there, but that would be rather difficult considering all the
different types of images.

Whoa! I don't _publish_ it! I just edit it. It's called Computing Now! and
it's Canada's only newsstand distributed, end user publication. I'm also
doing Computers in Education, which is also distinctly Canadian.
Malcolm
Thanks for the pointer on the book; we're always looking for such things.

No problem Ben. Steve's book is a good one and has a lot of info about the
file formats. He is also here on CompuServe and usually hangs out in the
Graphics Support forum (GRAPHSUP). I believe he also wrote the program
Graphics Workshop for the PC's.

I've looked at a lot of these books, too – I haven't found one that's close
to being "right." If they handle PCX, they don't really handle it all, or
they don't do all of GIF, or they leave out the hard parts of TIFF. I was
reading a new one the other day, where the author was quite frank about
where he thought bugs still existed in the code, and left their repair and
diagnosis to the reader as an "exercise."
Thanks Ben! I've been waiting for this one.
