(continues from prior message) #4 of 4 If you don't know Argentina, here is a little geographic review: Argentina is one of the few countries of South America with a population 85 percent european and only 15 percent mestizo. It's the second in land extension after Brazil. There are no color people here like in Brazil, and nearly all the people descends from Spanish people (from the colony time) or from the great post-WW II inmigrations from Italy, and Germany. The national treasures are: futbol (soccer, as you call it), tango music, the best meat in the world (cow beef) (we have two-and-half cows per habitant), Atlantic beaches, skying tracks in Bariloche over the Andes, horses and the nicest girls. -Now about me: My mother is italian, my father's argentine, but his father was italian, too. I have a small company (only me!) of video editing, post-production and video titling (with AMIGA of course!) wich includes a 8-MB Adspeed accellerated 1 meg chip ram and Supra500XP Amiga 500 with DCTV, SuperGen genlock and DSS sound sampler; and a 8-mb 386 clone with OS/2 2.0 and DR-DOS 6.0 (all purchased in the U.S.). And finally: I hate …..soft (the name that starts with Micro…) I am Digital Research fanatic (and DR-DOS) I like the Amiga, Gloria Estefan (and his music), jazz, blues, and good pop music. I think that's all about me. Now, what about you? How do you think about the U.S. Amiga market ?? What do you use your Amiga for ?? I hope mi answer was enough… If you or any other user that read this messages thinks that any part could be of interest to another users (about CIS & Amiga's situation in Argentina) feel free to send it wherever you want. (Please mention me) Fernando FC Video, Buenos Aires, Argentina. NOTE: Do you know the address of Commodore International ??

Fernando, Thank you for your most informative and interesting message about Argentina. I'm glad you also told us something about yourself. I wish we had the influence to get a Commodore presence there, as you suggest, but most of us are just users and supporters – not decision makers. When the Amiga first came out, it was less expensive than just about any brand of computers. This is no longer so. Clone makers have pushed the prices of MS-DOS machines so low that it is hard for anyone to compete with them on price. We wish that the Amiga prices for the better machines were lower, too. We have to pay high prices for them ourselves.

Betty, I agree with you, but in the U.S. at least you get support, warranty, and good software stores. In Argentina, Amiga users have nothing. The only "support" is by using CompuServe (like I do) to contact tech support, info on new products and the like. But not everyone can acces it because of the high communication surcharges. (It could be a good policy of CompuServe to install a CompuServe node in Argentina for south America access) Thanks for reading my message, and "being there" NOTE: Please let me know if my English turns Spanglish… Regards, Fernando. FC Video Buenos Aires, Argentina. in the very southern Buenos Aires.

Your English is excellent. We'd be very happy if CIS were to put a node in Argentina and some of the other cities of South America, too. I suspect it will come, in time. They have made great strides within the past couple of years. It was only a year or so ago that they opened a node in London and one in Germany. They are now preparing to open quite a number of other European nodes. They have only recently arranged for easy CIS access in Australia and New Zealand – this since the European nodes were up and running. There is easy access from Japan now, too. I'm sure that they are looking at the rest of the world and deciding where to put their efforts next. Please understand that I'm not speaking with any kind of inside knowledge or authority. I have neither of those. I'm only guessing from what I've been observing over the past few years.

Fernando, What a fascinating message! You must be independently wealthy just to be able to answer these messages. I don't think I would use CIS at the prices you have to pay! I am in Maui, HI. I runa commercial printing plant. Amigas are my core computer system. I have one 3000 and three 2000's. I'll soon be putting a 68040 board in the 3000 and LOTS of memory. The Amiga is the most productive machine we have. We have MACs and PC's just to be able to service our customers' files. The lack of good software on this machine is a real problem, but despite its deficienci deficiencis, it is wonderful. We've been looking at a Sparcstation very seriously. If only CBM would incorporate something like the DMI resolver circuitry into this machine, it could compete with almost anything short of a Cray! Rich

Richard, Thanks god, video editing and titling in post-production is well paid in Argentina since only a few people have the equipment need to do it. I think that the situation will change soon, as more video equipment is available at lower prices, so I will face more competition! And I'm not rich, at least I don't drive a Porsche like the MS' boy. (I don't have a car!). Every cent I got from my work goes into: 1) Buying video & computer magazines: Byte, Camcorder, PC Mag, Amiga World, .info (!), AmigaAnimation diskmagazine and PC World magazine) 2) Buying Amiga & PC PD and Shareware. 3) Buying updates of the commercial software I own. 4) Buying more and more CDs, music videos and Laserdiscs. If there is some money left, it goes into my special "Hardware upgrade Monetary Fund (HMF)" to reserve money for hardware upgrades. From last year on, since I received my copy of CIM 2.0 and begun my "addiction" to CIS I spent all the supoused reserved money. Making my plans for a NEC CD-ROM dissapear!. I plan buying AutoPilot when available and I'm always trying to find cheaper ways to connect. I hope it cuts my connection times in half! Also I'm now trying to find if I could access CIS using Chile's Chilepac network or ARPAC network (national phone company packet-switching network) both which supports 9600 baud connections. And about your business, I guess that running a commercial printing plant is a *very* profitable business! About the SparcStation, I suggest waiting for the "new" Amiga. I think the cost of adding the DMI Resolver hardware will make it too much expensive. There are a lot of cheaper 24-bit options. But anyway, we'll have to wait for CBM R&D! The Brazilian women may be beautiful, but they're almost all Catholic. 🙂

John, Who was talking about Brazil ??? 99 percent of U.S. people I know think Buenos Aires is in Brazil… (maybe the U.S. government has wrong maps ???) About the woman… 1) I can't see the difference … how are catholic woman in the U.S.?? 2) You use to pray with womans… ?? (me not…) 3) Have you visited Buenos Aires ?? And what Syndesis corp does…? I always knew I was in the other 1 percent. Whoops! The Argentine women are at least as comely as the Brazilians. Actually, Americans are terrible at geography – at one point in recent history, they tested either Texas or Oklahoma high school seniors, two states just to the North of Mexico, and they couldn't identify the country on the southern border of Texas.

You know, piney woods, fire ants, big poofy hair-dos, gunracks, empty office buildings – you know the place! 🙂

John, Surely you aren't saying such things about Argentina!! (The header certainly says Argentina, though.) And I think I'm ignoring you.
#26831From: SyndesisAug 13, 1992 11:32 PM
And I didn't make any schoolmarm jokes, either. 🙂
