A friend of mine who doesn`t have a modem asks if he can upgrade his B2000
already fitted with a C= A2630 go faster board to WB2.04. He has been told
he can`t get the necessary chips for this board. Commodore over here have
been less than helpful and don`t seem to know the answer. What can he do
about this?
2nd problem is that he wants to get a decent video add on so that he can do
good quality photo renditions on screen. He is a training film producer so
wants to know what the considered opinion is of current video cards etc.

It shouldn't be any problem to upgrade to WB2.04 — just buy the Extender
Kit (ROMs, a couple of disks and a manual) and either have the dealer plug
them in or do it himself.
I don't know if there are any incompatibilities with the A2630 and WB2.04,
so I really can't answer you there.
As far as video goes, is he looking for motion video, still photos, PAL
video or RGB [on screen] video. What will be the end-medium? [video tape
or displayed on a computer screen]
There are a lot of options depending on just what his use is. To display
hires, high color images is easy: a Firecracker, Impact Vision,
Framebuffer will do. For video editing the Toaster is the best. Still,
the AVideo 24, OpalVision and Harlequin offer other options and DMI &
Progressive have accelerated boards for high-speed rendering and displays.
DCTV is there for composite output (previews of animations, etc.)

I bought the chips for my 2630 at my local dealer's quite some time ago
for about $25-30. They are easy to install. I'm sure your friend can
order them from almost any of the mail order firms over here that handle
Amiga stuff, or I might be able to arrange for him to order through my
dealer. She even gives ICPUG members a small discount – remember? Though
she would charge extra for the postage and handling, and would have to
charge Texas 8% sales tax. She's not really a mail order dealer, you see,
but she would probably help out.

I thought that sales tax on out-of-state orders was struck down by the
Supreme Court? I know that California is changing the law here to reflect
it.

Pete,
Your friend will need the latest version of the A2630 ROM's in
order to work with a 2.04 ROM in his system. The problem with the older
A2630 ROMs is that they have an addressing conflict with the 2.04 ROM.
Dealer's should be able to order the update ROMs for the A2630 from
Commodore.

The 2630 requires the latest version of its ROM's in order to work with
2.04 correctly. I'm assuming these are the chips your friend can't get? If
so here are the part numbers you need to order from C=. 390282-07 and
390283-07 These are the two EPROMS on the 2630 card and are required for
reliable operation under 2.04.
