I am interested in info on HP inkjet printers. I have a PaintJet and am
pleased with it. I understand there's a PaintJetXL and a new one with 300
dpi resolution. Anyone used either of these two? Know anything about their
features which differ from the original PaINTJET . I'd also like to know if
there are different printer drivers for Amigas which allow these printers
to be used. Thanks, George

I have a DeskJet 500C that works on my Amiga system. It has 300dpi and
24bit color. I have it connected to the parallel port and am using a
public domain printer driver. Not all features are supported by the driver
I think. i.e. font changes from inside Excellence!.
I like it and it is MUCH better than the ImageWriterII that it replaced 🙂
I don't know how the specs on the 500C compare to your printer since I
don't know anything about it.
If you have specific questions, I would be happy to try to answer them or
look them up in my manual. One important consideration for the 500C is
that it only uses 3 ink colors so black is achieved by mixing. Naturally a
4 ink printer that has true black would work better in some cases.

Thanks Patrick. I think I'd heard that the 500C used color only. I am a
painter and the availability of black is important to me in some instances.
I'm intrigued by the idea of 24bit color though. The extra resolution
sounds good too. Where'd you get the PD driver. If I could get a copy, I
might be able to coax my HP dealer to bring one in for me to test with my
Amiga. Best George

You can put a black ink cartridge into the HP 500C and use it for black
only if you wish. (i.e., you're not restricted to using the 3 color
cartridge.)

If you take an already started color cartridge out of an HP 500C, is there
a chance the cartridge will dry up?

With my HP500C came a little box especially for the storage of partly used
cartridges. I've stored a colour cartridge in the box for upto a month
without noticing any problems whatsoever. I don't know what the limit is.

I also had a 500C and never had any problem with the colour cartridge
provided it was kept in the small box that was supplied when I bought the
printer.

I'm not certain, but I'd think that one could take precautions against the
ink drying up. Too much swapping could be a real ink waster, though, in
terms of initializing the printer.
I only made the point because I didn't realize at first that it was
possible to use a standard black-only ink cartridge in the printer until I
asked about it. That way, you can use it for a normal printer, and only
print color when you specifically need color.

No, I don't have an HP 500C. I've been thinking of buying one, and have
looked at them a little bit. I've sort of decided that a laser printer has
to come first for me, and then maybe something like the HP 500C.

Re Patricks comment to you about DJ500C. I recently had one although now
sold in favour of a LJ printer. However, the black produced is a composite
black and when wet looks very muddy and dark green(ish). It does dry to a
'blacker' shade of black, if there is such a thing. But it most certainly
isn't real black.
The colours when printed via prefs ( I used Carolyn Scheppners driver) were
too dense but could be corrected very well with Art dept using the gamma
function.
All in all, a very good colour printer and wortH buying if you need/want
colour.
