A contact for Video Media, makers of PACE (Professional Animation Control
Engine) and V-Lan, (no idea what that acronym means), is Michael Levin,
(408) 227-9977. Another is Ian Weingold, same number. Ian will go the
extra mile for you, but he's difficult to get ahold of.
As far as I know, the only difference between a PACE and a V-Lan, other
than the PACE costing a couple hundred more, is that the PACE ships with
all the necessary cables, (though not any BNC cables). Price on each,
depending on your dealer, is in the $2000 range.
I have been using Lan with 3DS since the beginning of the year and the
only problem I've had has been with the V-Lan driver that ships with
3DSr2, it's no good. V-Lan shipped out a new driver and it works quite
well, you really would never know the difference between the V-Lan and,
say, a Diaquest. It works with all Sony decks, and just about any other
deck you'd care to name. It consists of a transmitter hooked up to the PC
(or Mac), and a receiver hooked up to the deck. Both are housed in one
unit that is rack mountable. A single transmitter can control up to 31
decks simultaneously, provided each deck has a receiver.

I noted with great interest your experience with V-LAN. I'm seriously
considering that for a future purchase. Have you tried any rotoscoping
with V-LAN and 3D Studio? Is 3rd Party software required?

I've used the V-Lan to do rotoscoping with TOPAS and it works fine. 3DS
does require 3rd party software to do frame-captures, so you would need
extra software for 3DS no matter which deck controller you choose, (though
I think Diaquest ships a program called 'Digitize' with its product for
just that purpose).
I have a program called 'Mcapture' that shipped with my Matrox board that
might work, but I've never tried it out. I know the 3DS manual describes
how to set up the process in Video Post on page C-7 for the Diaquest, but
the procedure would be very similar for the V-Lan.
