Even so, I think Amiga companies do a fantastic job of producing high end software that requires very little space. Compare Imagine to 3D Studio and you'll see what I mean, or Prowrite and Word…..

No question, high quality Amiga programs tend to take very little disk space. I don't want to get into a big discussion about it, but I don't think there's much of a comparison between Word and ProWrite. For light wordprocessing, maybe not, but for POWER users, ProWrite just isn't powerful enough. One thing Windows apps have to do is include screen imagery for different resolutions such as 640×480 and 1024×768. Using the same imagery for both doesn't work well. Sometimes they even include imagery for monochrome or gray scale notebooks, too. Amiga programs on the other hand, generally run in a single resolution or at least only have one set of UI imagery. Speaking of size, however, look at Toaster software. HOW many disks does it come on? If you look at huge packages, they often tend to include TONS of clip art, templates, big big help files, tutorials, etc. The executables don't tend to be a big part of it. Our ImageFX has online help, but only a few pictures which we JPEG'ed to make sure they were small. We would have liked to include more, but it became difficult. Everything's compressed on the install disks, and it still takes 4 disks. But you get a lot. In summary, I don't think there's a simple answer as to why some packages are big. Paul.
