#Converting to .GIF

In converting scans to IFF and IFF to GIF format, much file data is
lost with the resulting image degradation. Are there programs which will
convert RAW, IP or IMG8 files dirfectly to GIF without first having its data
reduced by IFF? Or are there any programs that produce a better conversion
than conversion than AMGIF?
Jack, you'll find GIF images naturally lose information from your scans no
matter what because GIFs are only 256 colors at most. You might want to
consider saving your images as JPEG (.jpg) which save more of the color (nearly
the full 24 bits).
A better GIF renderer is going to be found in a commercial package like our own
ImageFX, but AMGIF does a credible job.

Thanks for the reply! Sometimes I see .GIFS with huge file sizes. These are
apparently VGA/SuperVGA-to-GIF renderings. When I do an image scan on a frame
grabber, I get a half-meg RAW file, which compresses down to about 300k. By
the time I've converted down to GIF via IFF, I'm down to about 70k. I realize
there are some inherent diminishing returns here – absolute limits imposed by
the code.
If you wanted to convert your Amiga-generated scan to a GIF whose image
was as close to, let's say, HAM qaulity, what would you use?
Jack…again AMGIF is probably your best PD choice. If you go commercial
you'll enjoy our ImageFX quite a bit!
