Tom, Not sure about using captured images from encyclopedias and such, as it's usually copyrighted. I am doing an animated, 6-section Ohio fly-in for a local production house, and I just captured the map on video. I made a 4-grey image of it from ADPro, and reduced it to just an outline in DPaint. This was saved. I then traced the outline of the state using the onionskin function, so I drew it, and didn't use the actual picture from the atlas. Then I just put in as much detail as I could with DPaint. The saved line drawing was used with Pixel3D to make the objects, and the colored image I made was used as the surface color map in LW. Text is applied as a diffuse reflection map. Took about 4 hours from start until the first sample frame was generated. Doesn't look too bad, but I don't get real close. The client will tell us Friday. You may be able to do similarly. Do you need county lines, city boundaries, colored elevation map, or any other specifics? This will determine how much work is needed this way. Satellite pics for your area may be available somewhere, and you may be able to use the elevation map as a bump map. Frame all of the images and scale to the same size to make mapping easier. Good luck. … Nate.
