#SGI Indy system

Well guys and gals, you can all relax. The indy system isn't the amiga-killer
many of us thought it would be. I saw an SGI showing of it 2 days ago here in
Orlando. (It's touring the country, call SGI for more info – Voyage of
Discovery it's called 1-800-800-7441 for more info). Anyway the base price is
of course $4995. All the SGI guys basically laughed at 16megs. Like OS and 2
copies of VI running. Realistically you will want a minimum of 64megs for anim
and video work… the memory alone will add $6000! With a 500meg drive you are
looking at $12,000, easy.
Don't rest long, though. 2 yrs ago they released the Indigo @ (realistically
again, for comparison) $20,000+. 3 years before that it was the Personal Iris @
$40,000+. Do you see a trend here? Look for war in the trenches in '95-96. The
machine we have all been dreaming of for $5000..

Are you in Orlando, FL.? I live in Tamp, FL. and am planing on going to
the Orlando/Daytona area the last 2 weeks in October, is there a
Toaster/Graphics/3D type user group that meets in that time? I'd LOVE to
drop by and say hello.

Again, remember that even with the ram you would need, you still don't
have a 24bit broadcast output machine! Nor software! Basically you have
a high-priced teleconferencing machine. I prefer to stick to the
telephone. 🙂
