#Aspect Ratios

I am looking for correct aspect ratios for all common resolutions between 640×480 through 2048×1536. Has anybody published any info on this before? The 3ds manual does not really cover this much.

Basically, the standard computer monitor resolutions (non-video) all use a pixel aspect ratio of 1.0. This includes 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×1024, 2048×1536. Pluss, pretty much anything you do for print will also use a 1.0 aspect ratio. It's only video aspect ratios that tend to be custom.

The 3D Studio manual does a pretty poor job of covering this issue. Newer video cards do make life simple with 1.0 aspect ratios, but standard VGA (and the basic AAPLAY flic player) use an aspect ratio of 0.82. Life gets really wierd if you have a flic (0.82) that you want to print (1.0) or show on a different monitor (1.0) and then need to send out to a video frame buffer (1.23, 1.27, 1.05,…)!!! Also, some image files are saved with explicit aspect ratios and are corrected for whatever display or print automatically, and some are not! As far as I know, there is no handy, idiot proof, one-step way to convert images and animations between different aspect ratios. Donald Newlands

Donald: Thanks for your input on this sometimes confusing issue. My main concern at this point is with the correct aspect ratios for still images. When I need to go to video, I will follow the expert advice offered here on the forum (which has never led me wrong). I will continue to use the 1.0 aspect ratio for all resolutions for stills as advised by Gary Yost.
