Hi, I had D/L'd a text file showing speeds for different hardware
configurations, some of them refered to an Intel overdrive chip. Were you
refering to the DX2/66 as the DX/33 overdrive chip???
I'm about to shell out alot of green for a new system and I'ld like to go with
the fastest. On which system will 3DS run fastest. and would getting a targa
card with a 40 mhz TI34020 chip on it do me any good.
In fact what would you recomend as the fastest setup to run 3DS, if money
didn't matter, but pentuims weren't an option, as of yet.

If you can't afford a Pentium system, Michel, just go out and grab a DX2/66
with GOBS of RAM and a video card with good DOS performance. This should keep
you running as fast as possible in a non-Pentium world.

Do you know what was ment by the mention of "over drive". I'm about to buy a
DX2/66 but am
wondering wether to get one with the "over drive" ZIF socket. My distributor
says it's for the
PT24 (i.e. PentiumSX) chip. Are we all talking about the same thing?? And would
this be the
only way to run 3DS at its fastest??
P.S. I just picked up 32 meg of 60ns simms would their be any advantage of
putting in 64??

Hi Michel,
The "overdrive" socket to which you are refering is, indeed, for the
"overdrive" version of the Pentium. Someone correct me if I am wrong about
this, but I believe that this is a 32/64-bit chip and not a full 64-bit like
it's big brother. I have read MANY warnings about this chip and am not
reccomending it to my clients, even though I have no idea how much slower it's
floating point abilities may be. It's just that I have never reccomended an SX
chip for a proffesional installation — it just doesn't make sense. When you
consider the possibilities of speedy rendering times with the full Pentium, and
the fact that they really don't cost all that much (when you compare them with
multiple 66's each full of RAM), I say just go for the *real* thing. History, I
think, has pretty much shown us this much.
There would be a HUGE advantage to having more RAM in a rendering system if
your projects are going to be big enough to consistantly swap to disk during
rendering. So if you are gonna be doing a lot of medium-to-large projects, I'd
say go for the RAM!

From the latest I've heard about speed the pentium is it for real touchy feely
stuff now. You must buy a board designed for the pentiun. The P24T is, to my
understanding, not out yet and hasn't been benchmarked against the true
pentium, so who knows? Paying extra for a P24T board now is not good fiscal
judgement because who knows what last minute changes Intel will make even if
they do come out with the chip next year as planned. Also on the horizon is
the DX3 which should work in all DX-2 MB's.
My upgrade MB for now is an EISA/VLB busmaster with 72 pin SIMMS or the same
with 4 banks of 36 pin simms. One Meg cache. ( BTW I understand that the 72
pin simms can be installed one at a time not requiring purchasing in lots of 4
🙂 ) The CPU should be DX-2 or 3 compatible. I'll just wait on that

Yup, agreed. The DX3 certainly sounds like an interesting rendering-specific MB
upgrade for many. It would be great if it just dropped into the DX2 boards just
that easy.

Michel,
If speed is your primary concern, you should look into the ProRes/3DS
accelerator and driver product from Vibrant Graphics. The expensive hardware
will help you with your rendering. But only the ProRes accelerator can help
you with big models. You can expect 25% performance increase on a 486/66 in
the common modeling functions (3D Editor, Keyframer, etc.).

You've got great products. Now if 3DS only had a display list like AutoCAD it
would really fly. Redraws are still _way_ slower than AutoCAD. Is there a
reason for this?
