surely there is a way to import a .dxf file generated in coreldraw that doesn't result in a shape file containing four hundred and seventy nine million vertices! i know, there is and don't call you surely…i checked both the 3-d studio manual and the coreldraw manual and neither provides information in breaking down the coreldraw file to a significantly smaller file. any ideas? thanks

Just export out of CorelDraw with the .AI filter, Michael. Use the Illustrator88/As Curves parameters. Also, make sure there is NO FILL in any closed polygons and break apart any combined elements before exporting. After losding into the shaper, do Select/All followed by a Modify/Vertex/Weld/Selected to close the polygons. Hope this does it for you, -Alan Iglesias

I would be interested in knowing if this works better than the .DXF export from corel. I have corel 4.0. I also remember that a .DXF output from corel of a circle looked like a potato, (potato[e]) <g>. Is the AI output from corel any better? Thanks, Stephen

Yup, It sure is…DXF output from CorelDraw is basicly useless — just lots of vertices and no fun cleaning those up! Exporting from Corel in the .AI format is a little tricky, but VERY clean. Remember these steps: * Be SURE your elements in Corel are Broken Apart, and that any closed polygons have NO fill. * Export as .AI with the Illustrator 88/As Curves parameters. * Load into the Shaper with the .AI format. Your polygons should have the same number of vertices as when you started. * Do a Select/All followed by a Modify/Vertex/Weld/Selected to close coincident vertices of "opened" polygons.
