#This Ipas deal?
22 messages in this thread
Why can't someone or something tell my customer just what they need to actualy
complete some Ipas programs. It seems rather odd that no one seems to know the
exact details of whats up. Is a Ipas product manager out and about? Why does it
have to be so hard? Help, version #'s and issues on technique are just the
begining… What good is a tool that can't be used?
Thanks 2 tons

Dan,
Gus Grubba has been very helpful on this subject and is probably the best
informed on the nitty-gritty of IPAS development. The other programmers I know
who have done IPAS routines don't frequent this forum. I haven't seen Gus
around since Siggraph so hopefully he'll jump in. Have you tried doing a search
of the libraries with the keyword IPAS? This seems like the obvious place to
start. To my understanding you'll need teh IPAS SDK kit (available through
Adesk Multimedia dealers), Metware HighC compiler, & Phar Lap tools.
I'm not a developer, mainly because of the expense and learning curve, but I
hope I've been of some help.
Martin
Thanks, Martin.
I am a Multimedia dealer… The problem has been that little details seem to be
missing. Most of my customers are the type that won't get a modem, they want
spoon feeding and they get it. As a dealer I feel it is my responsability to be
the best resource they can find.
Thanks for your help. I am looking forward to getting more into this medium,
and hope to be a good resource to the forum. With any luck Gus is listening
right now… Gus?

I sent Gus off for a two week vacation to Antartica. Seriously!
He'll be back by the end of the month, and _after_ he catches up, I'll let
him back on the forum! <bg>

Master Animator, sir
Fair enough. Your booth was sure cracking at Siggraph. Did I see Gus in a lab
coat? Should I get into reading those badges… Anyway, the crisis has passed
and I'll buy the rounds at CadCamp. I'm bringing big brother / boss to meet
you…
Naked, running on a 386…

Dan:
See you at Cad Camp!
Greg Pyros
Greg,
>I sent Gus off for a two week vacation to Antartica. Seriously!
You mean YOU paid for his 2 week vacation? WOW, do you have any job openings???
<G>

No, all the friendly 3DS 'Action IPAS' users did!
>> WOW, do you have any job openings?
We just hired two more animators, but I'll let you know when another
position is available!
Greg Pyros
Greg,

Of course, you realized I was kidding, right? <G> Hey, isn't it your turn to
buy lunch? I'll be in your neck of the woods today, i'll give you a call…
Steve Ormonde
OK. I'm confused. How do you guys get the portions of previous messages to
appear in your message with the little >> signs? Do you actually re-type them?

Why'd you have to go and tell him? <g> Especially considering that he uses
OZ-CIS also, in fact he was the one who introduced me to it last summer?
Greg Pyros
Steve:

I just thought you were offering to work off all that rendering and
laser-disk work you had me do for you! <bg>
Greg Pyros
Greg,
Ouch! That hurt…
Speaking of laser-disk work, when you lay your animations to tape and reach a
stopping point and you leave a frame up for a few seconds, why does that image
look blurry?
Steve Ormonde
I'm not sure IPAS is something someone who likes to be "spoon-fed" should be
getting into. C programming in general has very little built-in error trapping
(ie it's up to the programmer to pay attention to all the little details), and
as I understand it, the IPAS stuff can be pretty finicky and particular. There
are also some IPAS SDK supplementary files here in the libraries that the Yost
Group uploaded.
Dave
I'd agree.
The big challenge of the 90's will be to make the powerful tools we see today
accesable to 50% of the market vs 15%. Ipas is a real hook for my customers.
The idea that a "C-Dabbler" can make her / his own effects is very interesting.
However, as you probably already know, C is not learned overnight with an audio
book-on-tape. I am working at putting a "basic Ipas info kit" for those who
want to work with the stuff. Plans are for a very basic kit that would just
tell the novice ALL of what they would need to get going. Not some AI doc that
reads like a novel, just a simple document that says "with these tools" you are
working! Any questions or comments are welcome.
Thanks for the info,

I don't know, it takes much more than a little dabbling to write in IPAS!
The 'c' portion isn't too bad, it is the Phar-Lap linking, debugging tools,
and compilers required that keeps most people out of it, IMHO!

We all hope so!

Gee, Mr Pyros…
I would like to say nice work on your award from Autodesk… You sure have a
wonderful relationship with them.
Keep up the great work!

Dan:
Good luck with your Intro-To-IPAS. I just wish the price of the darned
compilers would come down a bit! I have an old copy of Borland C (_before_ ++,
even!) which I haven't played around with in a while (just to write an in-house
program for logging plots sent to the plotter by job number). I'm just too
darned busy these days (you know how rough it is to be a Renaisannce man in the
90's!<g>).
Dave
Cool…
Have a render on me…
