RENDERING PROBLEMS

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME, I HAVE GOT A VERY MAJOR PROBLEM, I HAVE CREATED A SURFACE
REVOLVED OBJECT WITHIN 3D STUDIO, AND THEN CUT HOLES OUT OF THE SIDE OF IT, BUT
IT HAS LEFT SOME FUNNY FACES WITH A DIFFERENT SHADE OF THE SAME COLOUR. I
THOUGHT THAT SMOOTHING GROUPS MAY RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM BUT IT DIDN'T.
ANY THOUGHTS AT ALL WOULD BE VERY WELL RECEIVED AS WE HAVE A VERY TIGHT
DEADLINE TO MEET.
THANKS. PHIL (KEYFRAME COMPUTER GRAPHICS)

Hard to tell excatly what's going on with your file, Phil, but I'll give it a
couple of shots…*Some* of the problem may stem from a coincidental vertice
thing happening in the center of your SurfRev object. Zoom in and select all
the vertices in the center, Weld them, and then Boolean your object. If the
"changing colors" problem shows up after Booleaning, this is just a artifact of
the process. If it is just colors that have changed, and not the edge-sharing
faces ability to "smooth together", then simply select the faces in question
and apply the appropriate material.
Hope you get some ideas from this,

Phil,
It doesn't sound like a core vertice problem like Alan suggested – but you
never know. It sounds like you are just booleaning with objects that are not
detailed enough. Try tesselating the faces of one or both of your objects and
do the boolean again. I had this same problem last week and that was the
culprit. I tesselated my cutting object and bingo – no extra faces. Hope that
helps.
