33 or 486-66

In the near future, I am going to be purchasing new computer systems. The problem I have is whether or not to get 486-33, or 486-66, which is about $300.00 more. I primarily use 3D Studio and Animator Pro. Is the 486-66 performance much better than 486-33 on these packages? Or does anyone been having any trouble with 486-66 simply because its a 486-66? Another question is whether or not to get them with DOS 5 or DOS 6. I am not too concerned with the compression feature in DOS 6 because I am currently using Stacker without any problems. Is it worth it to get DOS 6 at this time, or does it have too many bugs yet? Any input on either of these questions is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! Mike C.

Well worth the $300 in speed increase! >> Another question is whether or not to get them with DOS 5 or DOS 6. I use DOS 6 with QEMM, no problems, as long as you stay away from the disk compression! Greg, Thanks for the reply. I've heard about many problems people were having with DOS 6, but I do not remember any specifics, since it did not concern me at the time, because I was using DOS 5 with no problem and was not looking to upgrade. Are a lot of these problems all concerned with the compression portion of DOS 6, which I'm not concerned with anyway? And, are you able to disable the compression from DOS 6, altogether? And, do you know of any other problems people are having with DOS 6, other than with 3DS, like word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.? Thanks!!! Mike C.

Mike: No problems with any programs whatsoever with DOS 6, as long as you turn off the disk compression and the memory managers. Greg Pyros

That's not strange since this upgrade is not more than a dos 5.0+bad utilities bundle. Ana

Michael, the 486/66 is the best choice for 3ds as long as you have sufficient ram to avoid paging. Should be roughly twice as fast in rendering. I haven't bothered to upgrade from dos 5 to 6 and see little incentive to. I have QEMM and you won't catch me using disk compression again <scream!>

Michael The big thing that a 66 adds to the equation is that not just 3ds speed. In a production situation, even writing a bid faster can be very important. More is better aslong as you can work the budget #'s. Also note that the inverse law of cool programs seems to fit here. The cool programs that are coming to market burden even a 66. It seems that with each step in system speed, the software takes a few too! Good luck and go fast Dr Pixel
